Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Reed Basaev!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 8 - 0, fighting out of New York, Poto Tupu!
The judges for this bout are Robert Twigg, Frank Dennis and Gwen Towbar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Basaev misses with a wild body shot.
Tupu fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Basaev checks a low kick from Tupu.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Tupu.
Tupu has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout.
Tupu throws a head kick that misses.
Basaev defending well as Tupu loads up on a big left hand.
Tupu lands a nice hook to Basaev's body. Basaev takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
Basaev looks to land a body kick but Tupu moved away.
A little jabbing left from Tupu on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.
Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Basaev, as that shot connected.
Tupu swings for the body but Basaev moves out of range.
Basaev is looking to counter with head kicks.
Tupu throws a sloppy head kick and Basaev moves out of range easily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Basaev lands with a shot to the body.
Basaev connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head.

It looks like Poto Tupu has been cut.
Ouch! a nice leg kick from Tupu, right into the meat.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Basaev tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Tupu was well out of range. Poor timing from Basaev.
Tupu takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.
Basaev swings for the body but Tupu moves out of range.
Tupu is loading up here, looking for a big counter of his own.
Basaev throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Tupu throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Tupu doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.

Tupu avoids the body shot from Basaev.

Tupu throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Despite the aggression on Tupu's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.

Tupu lands a really nice looking cross but Basaev seems unphased.

Tupu throws a lazy uppercut
and Basaev counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Tupu connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.

Basaev tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Tupu was well out of range. Poor timing from Basaev.

Basaev is looking to wear down Tupu with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.
Tupu lands a lovely overhand right.
Poto Tupu seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Tupu takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.

Basaev uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Tupu.
Tupu has a nice red mark on his side after a thudding body kick by Basaev.

Basaev bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.
Tupu throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
Basaev misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Basaev ducks under a wild hook from Tupu.
Basaev is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot.

Basaev is using his height advantage well here, landing a good percentage of his punches.

Basaev lands a kick to the ribs of his opponent. Nice work there - in and out in a flash.

Basaev uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Tupu.

Basaev stuns Tupu with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.
Tupu throws a jab when Basaev was well out of range.
Basaev blocks the body kick.
Basaev misses with an uppercut.
Tupu throws a head kick but Basaev moves out of range.
A decent looking cross lands there for Basaev.
Tupu takes one on the chin but keeps coming.

And an attempted straight right on the counter from Tupu! But no joy.
The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end.

It looks like Basaev has been trying to sharpen up his punching technique, as it looks crisper than last time we saw him.
Tupu misses with a wild body shot.
Basaev feinted with a counter takedown.
Tupu throws a wild body kick that Basaev sees coming a mile off.
It appears Basaev was looking to counter with a kick there.
Tupu takes one to the side of the head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Reed Basaev dominated that round.
Both fighters have cut men working on them during the interval.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Basaev throws a looping overhand right but Tupu ducks down to avoid it.

Tupu shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Tupu frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Basaev is trying desperately to improve position.
Tupu trying to control but he's not successful this time.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Tupu moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Basaev has worked his arm free - good work by Basaev!

Tupu working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Basaev can't do much from the bottom here.

Tupu goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Basaev has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Tupu but great work by Basaev.
Tupu tries to get back to half guard but can't.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Basaev is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
Tupu is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Basaev is one step ahead and moves to full mount!
Tupu can't escape the position.
Tupu is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

Tupu slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.

Tupu is pressing down on Basaev's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Basaev wants to stand but Tupu has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Tupu is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Tupu bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Basaev's guard.

Tupu stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Basaev swivels though and keeps the full guard.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Poto Tupu showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Tupu connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Basaev momentarily.
Basaev takes a swing at Tupu's ribcage but misses.
Basaev leaves Tupu with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Tupu connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Basaev's hands.

Basaev fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Tupu looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
Basaev scores with a kick to the body.
Tupu takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Basaev scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard.

That has opened up Poto Tupu's cut even more.
Basaev's corner calls for a 1-2. Basaev obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
Basaev lands the left hand.

and Basaev cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

Tupu looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Tupu circles to his right, straight into a beautiful hook by Basaev. Tupu falls face first into the canvas - great knockout victory for Basaev!
