Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Edmund May (ranked 24531 p4p, 0 weight class) and Fernando Alvarenga (ranked 5857 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Edmund May!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Fernando Alvarenga!
The judges for this bout are Matheus Silva, Seu Braga and Leandro Rodrigues.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
May shoots in looking for a takedown. Alvarenga tries to sprawl out of it but May keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Alvarenga manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Alvarenga avoids the body shot from May.
May shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Alvarenga moves into the clinch.

Alvarenga's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
May changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Alvarenga tries to avoid it but May manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Alvarenga to the ground. Alvarenga escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Edmund May. That's going to take a lot out of him.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

May gets caught flat footed, as Alvarenga shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

Alvarenga stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. May swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Alvarenga must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
May is looking to stand up but Alvarenga isn't so interested in that idea.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Alvarenga gets a clinch.

Alvarenga's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Alvarenga moves into the clinch.
May missing with knees to the body.
Alvarenga stops a takedown attempt from May.
May wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
May avoiding damage as Alvarenga throws knees to the body.
Alvarenga is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables May to keep the fight standing.

May is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.

Alvarenga is trying to trip May. He has hold of a leg but May is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Alvarenga persists though and gets the takedown into guard.

May thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.

Alvarenga keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of May's head.
May is looking to sweep but instead, Alvarenga has passed into half guard.
May tries to kick Alvarenga off but Alvarenga keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Alvarenga is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

Alvarenga looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
May has a hand on Alvarenga's thigh, trying to get back to full guard. Alvarenga takes advantage of the position though and mounts him!

Alvarenga fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with May, pushing him back against the cage.
Alvarenga jumps guard but May stands there with Alvarenga around his waist. Alvarenga gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Alvarenga breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Alvarenga shoots in and bounces May off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

May working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Alvarenga has passed into half guard!

May got a little sloppy there for a moment and Alvarenga has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, May has managed to get both his arms back between Alvarenga's legs - danger averted.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Alvarenga can do anything to dispel that myth.
May throws a strike but Alvarenga rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Fernando Alvarenga showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


May changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Alvarenga tries to avoid it but May manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Alvarenga to the ground. Alvarenga escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Well Alvarenga has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
