Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Sam Weir (ranked 4842 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mike Smith (ranked 2260 p4p, 0 weight class). Smith has chosen Therion - Sitra Ahra as his entrance music. Smith has a niggling injury. He would have liked to come in 100% fit but that's not always possible. The fight MMA fans around the world have waited their entire lives for!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Sam Weir!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 46 - 49 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Mike Smith!
The judges for this bout are William Peck, Robert Douchet and Gregory Folan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Smith walks into a left hand.
Weir is looking to clinch but Smith is avoiding it.

Weir closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Smith did well to prevent Weir getting side control.

Smith manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Weir keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage.

Weir has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Smith uses from the top position.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Weir had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Smith defends it easily.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Weir tries to escape but Smith is in control.

Weir is looking to take a break and control but Smith is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Weir pushes Smith away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Smith gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.

Weir shoots in and drives through. Smith sprawls well.
Weir takes a body punch but keeps moving.

Sam Weir is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

and Smith counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Weir shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Smith pinned against the cage. Smith gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Weir turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Weir manages to end up in side control.

Smith has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Weir wants to lay and pray for a moment but Smith keeps working.
Weir looking to control but instead Smith has slipped a leg in, to regain half guard.

Weir stands up from guard. Let's bang!

Weir avoids the body shot from Smith.
Weir tried to score with a low kick but Smith checks it.
Weir goes for a double leg but Smith avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Smith continues to drive forward.
Weir ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Weir.
Weir tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Smith blocks a head kick by Weir.
A little jabbing left from Smith on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.
Weir tries to clinch up but Smith circles away and keeps his distance.

Smith moves in looking to clinch but Weir pushes him off.

Horrible takedown attempt by Weir or perhaps it was just good defense by Smith, which made it look bad.
Weir throws a leg kick which misses Smith's front leg but catches the back leg as Smith tries to avoid it.
Weir throws a series of strikes that have Smith backpedaling.

Weir closes the distance and clinches up with Smith, looking for a takedown. Weir pushes Smith against the cage but Smith circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Smith looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.
Weir looks to land a combination. Smith sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Weir shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Smith as he avoids it easily.
It seemed like Smith was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.
Weir fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

Mike Smith showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Well, if Smith is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Weir wants to control but Smith is keeping busy and won't allow it.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Smith throws a lazy head kick

and Weir counters with a nice double leg into half guard.

Smith is defending against the submission attempts here by Weir.
Smith is staying active underneath Weir, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Weir takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Weir stalling away here and it's allowed Smith to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Weir gets to his feet. Smith looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Smith stuffs the takedown attempt from Weir. Weir gets slowly back to his feet.
Mike Smith is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Weir misses with a straight left.
Weir fails with the takedown
and Smith counters with a nice uppercut.

Weir gets a double leg takedown into Smith's guard.

Smith pushes Weir off and gets back to his feet.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Weir is defended easily by Smith.

Mike Smith comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Smith has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
