PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Athos Knox (ranked 598 p4p, 1996 weight class) and Jake Bird (ranked 82 p4p, 256 weight class). Knox comes to the cage accompanied by Click Click Boom | Saliva. Jake Bird is staring across the cage at his opponent, tweaking his nipples.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 4 - 0, fighting out of London, Athos Knox!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Jake Bird!
The judges for this bout are Donatello Bradman, Steve Erwin and Topper Green.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Knox swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Knox throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Bird walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
Bird has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Knox finds it's way round the side to connect with Bird's head.
Knox throws a lazy right hand but Bird sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
A decent looking cross lands there for Knox.
Bird uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Knox.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Knox tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Bird is looking for the big counter here.
A jab from Bird misses.
Knox seemed to be looking to counter by closing the distance.
A looping hook to the body misses from Knox. Bird does a little dance to reset his feet.

Bird tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Knox defends well and Bird ends up having to push Knox into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Knox has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.

Bird has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout.
Bird slips a straight right by Knox.
Bird misses with a takedown attempt - Knox sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Bird jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.
Knox lands with a straight right. Bird didn't see that one coming.

Knox lands a powerful looking uppercut that connected with his opponent's jaw.

Bird clinches.
Bird tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.
Knox lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards.

Knox pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
No luck for Bird with that takedown attempt.
Athos Knox is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Bird avoids the body shot from Knox.
Bird uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Knox.
Bird looks like he wants to counter punch here.

Bird has taken the fight to the clinch.

Bird misses with a body punch.
A head punch on the inside from Knox fails to land.

Knox prevents a body shot from Bird.
Knox is using his height advantage well here, landing a good percentage of his punches.
With the fighters clinched against the cage, Bird creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut.
Knox misses with some punches.

Knox escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Knox throws a jab when Bird was well out of range.

and Knox counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Bird throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Knox misses with a body shot.
Knox sets himself, and Bird steps forward looking for the clinch! Knox avoids it this time.
Knox takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Athos Knox dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Bird tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Knox swivels and escapes.

It looks like Athos Knox has been cut.
Knox looks to throw the jab but Bird is out of range.
Bird displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Knox throws out the jab.
The crowd cheers as Knox lands an impressive looking overhand right. Bird doesn't seem phased though.
Knox misses with a looping left.
A little jabbing left from Bird on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.
Knox scores with a jab to the jaw.

A little jabbing left from Bird on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.
Athos Knox is winning the standup battle so far.

Knox lands an overhand right.
Knox is using his reach advantage well here, landing the more effective single shots from range.
Bird dodges the punch combination from Knox.
Bird drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Knox defends it well.
Bird keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Knox tries to bum rush Bird with a series of wild strikes but Bird uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Bird connects with a good right hand that stumbles Knox. Knox circles away out of range and recomposes himself.
Knox connects with a nice looking jab.
Bird throws a looping overhand right but Knox ducks down to avoid it.

Bird throws a right and a left that both miss.
Bird shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Knox counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Bird walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.
Knox moves out of range as Bird strikes.
Knox is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Bird.
A nice combination there by Knox.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Knox misses with an uppercut. Bird saw that one coming.

Bird closes the distance and clinches.

Bird pushes Knox back against the cage and unloads with a body punch.
Bird working aggressively here.

Bird ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Bird no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Knox looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Bird is looking to cinch up a triangle. Knox throws the leg off to one side though and gets in tight to Bird's body to avoid the submission. Bird has instead reached around Knox's neck and now has a guillotine! Oh, this is biiiig trouble! Bird arches his back and squeezes and forces the tap from his hapless opponent.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:40 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Jake Bird!
Jake Bird decided to hype himself up post fight. It was going well but he went on about it a bit too long and the crowd turned on him a little.
