PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between John Lennon (ranked 1887 p4p, 1331 weight class) and Klaus Chugman (ranked 100 p4p, 74 weight class). John Lennon had real problems making weight for this fight. After initially coming in at 136.5lbs, he had two hours to make the official fight weight. He made it but it will have taken a lot out of him to cut those extra few pounds. John Lennon has a significant reach advantage - let's see if he can make it count.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 21 - 20 - 1, fighting out of Los Angeles, John Lennon!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 23 - 15 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Klaus Chugman!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Anni Minnemäki and Marco Blurström.





The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Chugman bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Chugman wants to control but Lennon is keeping him busy.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Lennon stops Chugman from passing to mount.

Chugman wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Lennon, who protects the arm well.
Lennon manages to work his way to half guard, despite Chugman's best efforts.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Lennon keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.

Chugman looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Chugman is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Lennon has managed to free his arm - good work.
Chugman trying to control from half guard but Lennon is working away.
Lennon has hold of Chugman's hands but Chugman slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Lennon is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Chugman is trying to work for a kimura but Lennon is defending well.

Chugman seems to be looking for submissions.
Chugman is keen to just control but Lennon is a slippery customer.
Chugman wants to pass the guard but Lennon is defending well.
Chugman is trying to control. Lennon wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Chugman trying to mount his opponent but Lennon defends it.

Chugman is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Lennon has managed to free his arm - good work.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Chugman working his ground and pound in the gym.

Chugman thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Lennon's head.
Chugman not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Chugman tries to pass to full mount but Lennon defends it.
Chugman seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Lennon does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Lennon swings for the body but Chugman moves out of range.
Chugman throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Lennon sees it coming and avoids it easily.
John Lennon is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Lennon tries to close the distance and clinch but Chugman swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Chugman works Lennon's body with a nice hook.
Lennon avoids the body shot from Chugman.

Chugman moves out of range of the leg kick from Lennon.
Chugman tries to clinch but Lennon moves out of range.

Chugman shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

Chugman stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Lennon swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Chugman drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Chugman jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

and Lennon counters with a stiff right hand.
Chugman tries to close the distance and clinch up but Lennon swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Klaus Chugman seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Chugman tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Lennon manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Chugman on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Lennon. Lennon obviously looking to wear him down.

Chugman has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Lennon throws an elbow but it misses.
Lennon lands a hook that snaps the head of Chugman backwards.

Lennon creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses.
Chugman blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.

Lennon throws a nice elbow but it doesn't land.

Chugman jumps into guard, dragging Lennon to the mat.
We've been hearing good reports from Lennon's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

Chugman working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Lennon doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Lennon manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Lennon throws a strike but Chugman rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

That was a close second round but I would say that John Lennon will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!

Lennon stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Lennon wants it to stay on the feet.
A little feinted left hand from Lennon on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.

Still in the clinch, Lennon scores with a nice short uppercut.

Chugman has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Lennon is trying to keep an underhook but Chugman manages to get the takedown into half guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Chugman with shots to the head and body - Lennon looks very uncomfortable down there.

Chugman goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Lennon turns into him and now he's in Chugman's guard.
Lennon throws a big right hand that misses.
Chugman controls Lennon momentarily but Lennon frees himself.
Lennon won't allow Chugman to sweep him here.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Klaus Chugman.
I think Chugman has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
