PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jan Sobieski (ranked 588 p4p, 1028 weight class) and Sol Kwon (ranked 85 p4p, 145 weight class). Sobieski comes into the arena with Karnivool - Lifelike blaring out of the sound system. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Jan Sobieski!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Sol Kwon!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Timothy Bukovac and Frank Antenori.

It looks like Sol Kwon has been cut.

Kwon throws a low kick but Sobieski avoids it.
Kwon has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout.

Sobieski tries to counter with a takedown but Kwon is quick to defend against it.
Sobieski looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Kwon has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Kwon there as he acknowledges the shot.
Kwon pivots, looking for a leg kick but Sobieski is out of range and Kwon settles back down.
Sobieski swings for the body but Kwon moves out of range.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Kwon checks a low kick. Bone on bone - not my idea of a good time.
Sobieski uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Kwon.

Kwon throws an overhand right that lands on Sobieski's shoulder, as Sobieski tries to avoid the shot.
Sobieski turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
Sobieski wants to land a leg kick but Kwon is out of range.
Kwon misses with a looping left.
Kwon takes one on the button.
Sobieski throws an overhand right that lands on Kwon's shoulder, as Kwon tries to avoid the shot.

A looping hook to the body misses from Kwon. Sobieski does a little dance to reset his feet.
Kwon throws a body shot but no joy.

Kwon looks to land a right hand but Sobieski moved out of range.

This has been an exciting period of action!
Kwon gets cracked there but stands up to it.

Sobieski moves into range and connects with a jab.

Kwon has a nice red mark on his side after a thudding body kick by Sobieski.

and Sobieski counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Sobieski throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Kwon can't do much from the bottom here.
Kwon is not content to let Sobieski control the position.
Kwon is trying to improve his position.

Kwon is trying to control Sobieski's posture but Sobieski avoids it.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Kwon seems a little lost for a moment, as Sobieski dominates the positioning.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Kwon avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Sobieski.
Sobieski tries to score with some ground and pound. Kwon controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.
Sobieski has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Sobieski throwing ground and pound but whilst doing so, he forgets to control position and Kwon works his way back to half guard. Good composure under pressure.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.

Sobieski seems to be working for a kimura but Kwon defends the submission attempt.
Sobieski will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Kwon is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Back to the action!

Sobieski lands with an overhand left.
Kwon throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Sobieski stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
Sobieski is using his reach advantage well here, landing the more effective single shots from range.

Sobieski is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Kwon can do to turn this around?

Kwon breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Sobieski throws a leg kick but Kwon sees it coming and moves out of range.
Sobieski misses with an uppercut. Kwon saw that one coming.
Kwon takes one on the button.
Sobieski stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Kwon.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Kwon tests Sobieski's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Sobieski lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!

Sobieski throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
Sobieski throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Sobieski ducks under a wild hook from Kwon.

Sobieski feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Kwon wants to sweep but no luck.
Kwon controls Sobieski momentarily but Sobieski frees himself.
Kwon can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Sobieski controls the pace.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Sobieski's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

Sobieski keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Kwon's head.

Kwon is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Sobieski wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Sobieski lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Sobieski is pushing down on Kwon's leg trying to pass to half guard. Kwon is fighting to maintain full guard but Sobieski has managed to sneak the leg through.

The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Sobieski lands a nice short elbow.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!

Sobieski fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Kwon has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.

Sobieski tries for a takedown but Kwon sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Nice straight punches there by Kwon. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Kwon.

Kwon moves out of range of the body kick from Sobieski.
Kwon looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.
Kwon misses with an uppercut

so Sobieski counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Sobieski is in close to Kwon's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Sobieski looking to sit in guard and control but Kwon gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Sobieski seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Kwon passes Sobieski's left leg - he's now in half guard.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Sobieski tries to regain full guard. Instead though, Kwon has advanced to mount. Uh oh.
Sobieski is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Sol Kwon has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Kwon controlling the pace for now.
Sobieski is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Sobieski tries to hold on but Kwon pushes him away.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Sol Kwon.
Well Sobieski has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
