PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jaquon Jones (ranked 2248 p4p, 1182 weight class) and John McSulley (ranked 293 p4p, 165 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, John McSulley!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Shimada, Shirou Masuda and Tatsuya Matsuyama.

It looks like Jaquon Jones has been cut.
That kick from McSulley tenderised Jones's leg. Jones is trying to keep his angry face on.
McSulley works the jab nicely.
McSulley scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.

Jones seems to be moving with more speed, compared to his last bout. He must have been working on that in the gym.

McSulley feints and then cracks Jones's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Jones down.
Jones uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by McSulley.
Jones fakes high and swings low for a body shot but McSulley manages to avoid it.

Jones takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.

McSulley moves into range and lands a nice body kick.
Jones shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Jones swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
McSulley fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Jones has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
McSulley misses with a low kick.
Jones changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
McSulley throws a quick head kick that skims the top of Jones's head.
Sloppy strikes from McSulley. Those never looked like landing.
Jones misses with an uppercut. McSulley saw that one coming.
McSulley ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Jones moves away.
Jones tries to counter with a takedown but McSulley is quick to defend against it.
McSulley has been working his punching technique in the buildup to the fight and it appears to be paying off.
McSulley throws a nice inside leg kick.

McSulley bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Jones's head backwards.
John McSulley is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

McSulley works over Jones's head and body with a nice combination.
McSulley blocks a jab.
McSulley uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Jones.
McSulley let fly with a counter punch to the body but it didn't land.
McSulley is landing a lot of head punches in this opening round! Jones had better start moving his head a bit unless he wants his face to turn into pâté.

The fighters circling - Jones throws out the jab but it was never going to land.

Jones scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.
Jones throws an overhand right that lands on McSulley's shoulder, as McSulley tries to avoid the shot.
McSulley swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made.
Jones connects with the punch.
McSulley lands with a shot to the body.
Jones shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with McSulley but McSulley pushes him off and we're back to square one.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

McSulley lands with a hook. Jones tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.
McSulley lands a jab.
McSulley displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Jones.
John McSulley seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
McSulley scores with a jab to the jaw.
McSulley goes for a high kick. It partially lands.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Jones takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.
McSulley has used his reach advantage pretty well so far tonight.
Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Jones, as that shot connected.
McSulley throws a body kick despite being completely out of range

and Jones counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for McSulley!
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Jones wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by McSulley, who protects the arm well.
McSulley is looking to reverse the position.

Jones is trying to get an arm triangle but McSulley is defending well.

Jones thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
McSulley has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
McSulley is looking to regain half guard here but Jones keeps moving and retains side control.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Jones is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but McSulley is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
McSulley is looking for a sweep.
McSulley sneaks back into half guard.

Jones is trying to work for a kimura but McSulley is defending well.

McSulley tries to roll over but Jones keeps him under control.

McSulley is not content to let Jones control the position.

Jones is looking for a kimura but McSulley is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Jones to get the leverage.

Jones is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so McSulley is just riding it out for now. Jones eventually gives up the hold.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Jones wants to take a breather but McSulley is having none of it.
McSulley really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Jones. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
McSulley wants to control but Jones is keeping busy and won't allow it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Jones takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
McSulley comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.

McSulley ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.
McSulley catches Jones with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong!

Jones takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
McSulley connects with a body shot that sends Jones's belly button to the back.

McSulley pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
McSulley moves away from the strike by Jones.

John McSulley seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Jones moves forwards but McSulley connects with a nice, crisp jab.
McSulley thuds his right hand into Jones's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
McSulley clobbers Jones with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
Jones looks like he's developed a pretty tasty lump over his left eye. He'll need to avoid taking much more damage to that.
McSulley tests Jones's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Jaquon Jones has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

McSulley is looking to slow Jones down with leg kicks.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
McSulley throws a leg kick but he was too far away and it doesn't land.
Jones is hobbling a little on that front leg after taking quite a few leg kicks so far in this fight.
Jones shoots in but no luck this time.
McSulley turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.

Jones moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.

Jaquon Jones's cut is bleeding quite badly. He's got to try and protect it.
McSulley throws out a leg kick but Jones moves out of range and McSulley only half commits.
Jones was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.
McSulley throws a low kick but Jones avoids it.
McSulley looks to throw the jab but Jones is out of range.

McSulley lands a jab to the nose.
McSulley throws a head kick but Jones moves out of range.

Jones shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in McSulley's guard.
Jones stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. McSulley swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Jones has gone for a leg lock! McSulley slips out almost immediately though and dives into Jones's guard.

Jones had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. McSulley defends it easily.

John McSulley is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Jones manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. McSulley manages to get himself to full guard.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Jones is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! McSulley is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! McSulley has escaped and now he's on top!

John McSulley comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got McSulley winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
