The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Heartman feints and as Washington raises his hands in defense, Heartman changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Heartman avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Washington looking for a guillotine here but Heartman defends easily.
Heartman works over Washington with some ground and pound from guard.
Heartman trying to control the position from guard on top but Washington is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Heartman controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Washington might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Heartman passes Washington's right leg, so he's now in half guard.

Washington looking for submissions off his back.
Washington wants to improve his position but Heartman is controlling well.
Heartman looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Heartman in particular looking to stall.
Washington could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Washington works his way to full guard. Good work.

Washington throws his legs up looking for a submission but Heartman uses it to pass to side control.

Heartman working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Washington is not content to let Heartman control the position.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Heartman sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Washington is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.

Heartman wants to control but Washington is keeping him busy.

Heartman wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Washington, who protects the arm well.

Washington manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!

Washington wants to finish this one by submission but Heartman is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Washington.

Heartman is controlling an arm, preventing Washington from taking his back. Although keeping him in mount is no better to be honest.
Heartman gets back to half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Heartman is trying to control but can't.

Washington seems to be working for a kimura but Heartman defends the submission attempt.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Heartman misses with some strikes from the bottom.

Washington tries to free his leg and advance position but Heartman is retaining full guard.
Heartman controls Washington momentarily but Washington frees himself.

Heartman shoots in and drives through. Washington sprawls well.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

and Heartman counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Washington's guard now.

Heartman is looking to take a break and control but Washington is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Washington is in trouble now - Heartman has advanced to mount!

Washington tries to reverse the position but Heartman maintains control.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Heartman working for a submission here. He's tucked his head under his opponent's arm, looking for an arm triangle. He's hopped off into side control, looking to tighten the submission... is it going to work? He's given up a good position looking for it. Washington looks OK. Oh, I spoke too soon, he's out! That must have been tighter than I thought! Excellent work there by Heartman! Submission of the night perhaps?
