PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Mirko Crocop (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mark Omaly (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Omaly's choice of entrance music: Outside - To Forgive but not Forget . Mark Omaly told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Mirko Crocop!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Mark Omaly!
The judges for this bout are William Peck, Alec Ball and Trevor Gratis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Omaly drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Omaly wants to get up but he can't break Crocop's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Omaly drops back, looking for a kneebar! Crocop looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Crocop looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Crocop!
Omaly gets back to half guard.

Omaly looking to force a kimura from the bottom here. He's concentrating on that move too much though and Crocop pushes past his half guard into mount!
Omaly can't escape the position.
Omaly looks gassed!

Crocop is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Omaly can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Crocop trying to control but Omaly is having none of it.

Crocop prevents Omaly from getting the reversal.

Omaly is desperately trying to improve his position but Crocop has a good base and remains in mount.
Omaly tries to lock up and control but Crocop gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Crocop postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Omaly looks a forlorn figure.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Omaly can do anything to dispel that myth.
Omaly is in all sorts of trouble here.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Crocop looking to ground and pound but Omaly is blocking nicely.
Omaly wants to improve position but instead he's given up his back.
Crocop is throwing strikes from the back here. Oh that last one was to the back of the head. Crocop gets a warning from the referee. He throws another strike to the back of the head straight away though and the referee has seen enough. He breaks up the two fighters and stands them back up. Crocop gets a real talking to here and is lucky not to get a point deducted. Crocop apologises and we restart here on the feet.

Crocop lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Omaly circles away quickly and effectively.
No joy there for Crocop, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Omaly is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Crocop moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Omaly prevents Crocop from getting back to his feet.
Omaly with a flurry of punches that miss.
Crocop seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

Omaly postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Crocop is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Omaly, into his guard.
Crocop seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Omaly has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Crocop is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Omaly.
Crocop has knee on belly and moves into mount.

Omaly is squirming around, avoiding Crocop's attempts to control the action.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Omaly avoids a punch combination nicely.
Crocop throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Omaly shoots in but Crocop avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Omaly takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Crocop swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Crocop's corner calls for a 1,2 combination and Crocop duly obliges.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Crocop pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Crocop throws a sloppy head kick and Omaly moves out of range easily.
Omaly avoids a punch combination nicely.

Crocop gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Omaly to score an easy takedown into full guard.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Omaly is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Crocop is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Crocop has escaped and now he's on top!

Crocop decides to stand back up. Crocop steps back and let's Omaly get back to his feet.
Crocop throws a right hand that Omaly ducks under and follows up with a left that Omaly also avoids with ease.
Crocop tries a head kick but it misses.
Crocop misses with an uppercut. Omaly saw that one coming.
Crocop tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Omaly bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Crocop throws a push kick but Omaly slaps the foot to one side.
Crocop tries to bum rush Omaly with a series of wild strikes but Omaly uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Mirko Crocop seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Omaly shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.

Omaly is looking for a kimura here.
Crocop is looking to escape.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Crocop is concentrating on defense, preventing Omaly from advancing position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Mirko Crocop will probably get the nod.

Omaly bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Crocop tries to buck Omaly off but Omaly is having none of it.

Omaly tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Omaly has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Omaly thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Mirko Crocop is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Crocop wants to control but Omaly is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Omaly is working for a submission here. He's got hold of the far side arm and he's looking for a kimura. He's cranking on the arm and he's got it! Crocop is tapping out! Ouch, that looked like it hurt!
