PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jared Connor (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Frankie Russo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Jared Connor!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Frankie Russo!
The judges for this bout are Shigeki Fujiwara, Tatsuya Matsuyama and Yukihiro Yamamoto.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Russo throws a right and a left that both miss.
Russo shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Connor as he jumps to the side.

Connor scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.

Russo is defending against the submission attempts here by Connor.
Russo moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Connor drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Russo dives on top into guard.
Connor controls Russo momentarily but Russo frees himself.
Russo must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Connor avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Russo throws out a powerful jab.
Russo misses with the combination.
Connor takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.

Connor takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.

and Russo counters with a shoot takedown. Connor fights it but they end up in guard.

Russo throws and elbow that misses. Connor uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Russo's guard. Nice move by Connor!

Connor is looking to take a break and control but Russo is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Russo wants to control but Connor postures up.

Connor is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Russo is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Connor throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Frankie Russo dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Russo lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.
Connor misses with a takedown
and Russo counters with a nice uppercut.
Russo lands a body shot.
Danga de danga de dang - Russo scores with a four punch combination!
Russo slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.
Connor with a poor takedown
and Russo counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Russo throws a nice looking combination but Connor bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Connor tries to land a front kick but Russo steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Connor wants to clinch.
Russo misses with a double jab.
Russo changes levels and scores with a jab to the body.
Nice cross by Russo.

Russo throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Connor was covering up waiting for the punch and Russo finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Connor utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Connor keeping moving, preventing Russo from controlling successfully.
Connor is pulling down on Russo's head to control his posture.
Connor is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Connor wants to take a breather but Russo is having none of it.
Connor tries to pass to full mount but Russo defends it.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Connor uses his free foot to push down on Russo's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Russo.
Connor throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
Connor looking to control but Russo is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.

Russo avoids a series of strikes thrown by Connor.

Poor strikes thrown by Connor there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!
Russo manages to regain half guard. Good work.
Connor throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Connor is figuring out what he wants to do next.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Connor is working for a kimura but Russo is defending it quite comfortably.
Connor is looking for the mount but instead finds himself back in full guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Russo has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Connor has passed into side control.
Connor taking a break here but Russo is having none of it and regains half guard.
Connor seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Russo does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Frankie Russo showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

Russo fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Connor on the side of the head.

Frankie Russo seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Connor changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Russo looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Connor wants to take a breather but Russo manages to regain guard - a lesson learnt for Connor.

Connor has gone for a leg lock! Russo slips out almost immediately though and dives into Connor's guard.

Russo wants to pass the guard but Connor is keeping the position.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

and Russo counters with a shoot takedown. Connor fights it but they end up in guard.

Russo throws a strike but Connor rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Connor wants to pass the guard but Russo is keeping the position.

Connor stands and throws Russo's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Russo stops Connor from passing to mount.
Connor wants to control but Russo is keeping him busy.
Frankie Russo is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Connor working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

And that's the end of the fight!
Frankie Russo comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Russo has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
