Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Frankie Russo!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Shinya Aoki!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Shimada, Hirohito Nitta and Shigeki Sano.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Russo lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.


It looks like Shinya Aoki has been cut.
Russo throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Aoki.
Russo throws a shot from downtown. Aoki moves away and avoids it.
Shinya Aoki seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Aoki drives through with a takedown into guard.
Aoki stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Russo swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Aoki tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Russo paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Russo fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Aoki sprawls well initially but Russo persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Aoki misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.

Aoki is actively looking for submissions here but good counter grappling here from Russo as he works his way to full guard.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Aoki has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Russo, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
