PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Chris Herzog (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ban Ki Kim (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Herzog comes to the cage accompanied by Robert Tepper - No Easy Way Out. Kim has chosen Guns N' Roses: Welcome To The Jungle as his entrance music. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Chris Herzog!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Ban Ki Kim!
The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Leandro Rodrigues and Seu Braga.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Herzog goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Herzog is defended easily by Kim.
That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Herzog crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Kim - the referee stops the clock and Herzog gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Kim. Herzog manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.
Kim throws a leg kick

so Herzog counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Kim is looking to sweep but instead, Herzog has passed into half guard.

Herzog is working for a kimura but Kim is defending it quite comfortably.
Kim is not content to let Herzog control the position.

Kim desperately trying to maintain half guard.
Herzog throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Kim is concentrating on defense, preventing Herzog from advancing position.
Herzog trying to control the action but Kim is working from the bottom.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Ban Ki Kim hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Herzog swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Kim fails in his attempt to clinch.
Kim is looking to chop away at Herzog's legs.
Kim throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
Kim tries to clinch up.
Herzog circles away from the clinch attempt.
Kim displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Herzog.

Kim pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Kim tries to close the distance and clinch but Herzog swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

and Herzog counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Kim takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Herzog throws the kick towards the body but Kim avoids it.
Kim tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Herzog manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Kim looks to clinch
and Herzog counters with a nice kick to the body.
Kim darts in trying to clinch
and Herzog counters with a body kick that stops Kim in his tracks momentarily.
Kim tries to move into range but Herzog moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Chris Herzog dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Kim misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Kim darts in trying to clinch
and Herzog counters with a thumping low kick.
Herzog fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Kim manages to avoid it.
Herzog throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Kim tries to clinch up but Herzog circles away and keeps his distance.
Herzog swings for the body but Kim moves out of range.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

That kick from Kim tenderised Herzog's leg. Herzog is trying to keep his angry face on.

Kim uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Herzog.

and Kim counters with a slapping leg kick.
Herzog misses with a low kick.
Herzog wants to land a leg kick but Kim is out of range.
Herzog will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

and Kim counters with a good, hard body kick but Herzog shrugs it off.
Herzog finds nothing but air with that leg kick attempt.
Kim wants to clinch up but Herzog keeps it at a distance.

Kim moves out of range as Herzog throws a body kick.
Ban Ki Kim seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Kim throws a right and a left that both miss.

Kim moves into the clinch successfully.
Herzog takes an elbow to the forehead.


It looks like Chris Herzog has been cut.
Herzog tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Kim just stands there and leans against the cage.
Herzog has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Herzog fails to pull guard.

Kim pushes off an throws an elbow but Herzog leans to the side and avoids it. We're back to clinching against the cage.
Herzog tries to pull guard but Kim holds him up against the cage and eventually Herzog drops back down to his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Chris Herzog. That's going to take a lot out of him.
With the two fighters working up against the cage, Kim just misses with a elbow thrown towards Herzog's brow.
Herzog blocks an elbow strike.
Herzog wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Kim has him pressed against the cage.
A nice glancing elbow lands by Kim.

Kim creates a bit of space for himself and sneaks an elbow through Herzog's defenses.

Herzog throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Kim sees it coming and avoids it easily.

and Herzog counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Kim takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Kim tries to clinch but Herzog is having none of it.

A close second round but Ban Ki Kim will probably get the nod - 10:9.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. And we move into the final round!

Kim doesn't manage to clinch there - Herzog circles away.
The fight stays on the outside here - Kim looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Herzog shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Kim wants to stand but Herzog is controlling the position.

Herzog thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Herzog has gone for a leg lock! Kim slips out almost immediately though and dives into Herzog's guard.

Herzog isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Kim stacks Herzog on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Kim!
Herzog tries to bench press Kim off him but Kim keeps the position.
Kim is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Herzog's shoulder. That is not cool.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Herzog manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Kim wants to stand but Herzog has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.
Kim performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Herzog has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Kim is working away from the top position though.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Ban Ki Kim.
I think Kim has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
