PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Mervin John Ruiz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Joey Turnt (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Mervin John Ruiz!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Joey Turnt!
The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Robert Douchet and Dillan Fox.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Turnt shoots in for a takedown but Ruiz shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Ruiz has closed the distance and engaged Turnt in a clinch.

Ruiz has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Turnt uses from the top position.
Turnt slips nicely into half guard.

Turnt is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Turnt is looking to take a break and control but Ruiz is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Turnt throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Ruiz wants to control but Turnt is keeping busy and won't allow it.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Ruiz is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Turnt is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

Turnt looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Ruiz is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Turnt pulls his head out easily.

Turnt is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Ruiz has managed to free his arm - good work.
Turnt passes into side control, despite Ruiz's attempt to control the position.

Turnt is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Ruiz knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Turnt is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Ruiz has escaped the position, nice work there.

Turnt looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.

Turnt goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Ruiz has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Turnt but great work by Ruiz.

Ruiz decides to stand back up. Ruiz steps back and let's Turnt get back to his feet.
Turnt shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Ruiz as he jumps to the side.
Ruiz shoots for a takedown but Turnt saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Ruiz fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Turnt, pushing him back against the cage.
Turnt wants a takedown.
Mervin John Ruiz has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Joey Turnt.
Turnt is trying to drag Ruiz to the mat but Ruiz just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Ruiz's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Ruiz tries to clinch but Turnt moves out of range.
Ruiz lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Ruiz.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Ruiz misses with a head kick.

Ruiz gets a clinch.
Turnt gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Ruiz.

Ruiz pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mervin John Ruiz dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.



Ruiz shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Turnt napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Turnt sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.

Ruiz wants to work for an arm triangle but Turnt is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Turnt works his way to full guard. Good work.

Ruiz stands and steps away. Turnt gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Mervin John Ruiz seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Ruiz misses with a series of wild punches.
It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Ruiz here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.
Turnt has a takedown stuffed.

Ruiz moves into the clinch.

Turnt shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Ruiz pinned against the cage. Ruiz gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Ruiz tries to sprawl but Turnt drives through with a takedown into half guard.

Ruiz tries to roll over but Turnt keeps him under control.

Turnt has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Turnt misses with a head shot. Ruiz uses the momentum to regain guard.
Turnt wants to pass the guard but Ruiz is keeping the position.

Turnt has gone for a leg lock! Ruiz slips out almost immediately though and dives into Turnt's guard.

Turnt has his foot on Ruiz's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Ruiz works his way back into a safe position though.
Turnt can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Ruiz controls the pace.
Ruiz has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Turnt is proving hard to escape from.

Ruiz got a little sloppy there for a moment and Turnt has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Ruiz has managed to get both his arms back between Turnt's legs - danger averted.

Turnt working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Ruiz doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Ruiz manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Ruiz wants to stand but Turnt is controlling his posture from full guard.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Ruiz accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Ruiz slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Turnt is trying to escape and get back to his feet.
You can see the frustration on Turnt's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Ruiz is looking to take a break and control but Turnt is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Ruiz tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Ruiz has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Turnt is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Turnt is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Joey Turnt will probably get the nod - 10:9.
That's time! Ruiz's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Ruiz swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Ruiz throws a nice looking combination but Turnt bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Nice sprawl there from Ruiz as Turnt shoots in.
Ruiz lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.

Ruiz closes the distance and pushes Turnt back into the cage.
Turnt is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Ruiz gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Ruiz managing to block the knees to the body from Turnt.
Ruiz is pressed up against the cage. Turnt has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Ruiz down to the mat. Ruiz avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Mervin John Ruiz has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Joey Turnt.
Ruiz lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Turnt backs up against the cage.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Ruiz shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Turnt's guard.
Ruiz content to stall in guard here.
Turnt takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Ruiz decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

Ruiz shoots in and gets a takedown into Turnt's guard.

Ruiz has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Turnt to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Ruiz is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Turnt pulls down on the head and he's put Ruiz to sleep! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:39 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Joey Turnt!
