PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Jorge Junior (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Felipe Pontes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jorge Junior!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Felipe Pontes!
The judges for this bout are Felipe Paraventi, Paulo Santos and Luis Engracia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A big right from Pontes misses.
Pontes shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Junior pinned against the cage. Junior gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Junior will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Pontes misses with a wild combination.
Junior scores with a nice strike.
Pontes shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Junior as he avoids it easily.

Junior clinches up against the cage.
Pontes is looking to break free of the clinch but Junior has double underhooks.
Pontes is looking to control Junior's arms but Junior gets an underhook and turns him. Now Pontes has his back to the cage.

Junior is trying to trip Pontes. He has hold of a leg but Pontes is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Junior persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Junior throwing strikes but missing.
Junior throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Pontes pushes Junior off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.
Jab, cross, leg kick. Nice combination by Pontes!
Pontes throws a right and a left that both miss.
Junior staying out of range there.
Junior throws a hook to the side of Pontes's head but Pontes sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Junior throws a right and a left that Pontes avoids nicely.
Junior bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Junior ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Junior jabs Pontes right on the nose. Pontes blinks but takes it well.

Junior shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Junior seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Pontes looking for submissions off his back.
Junior moves into full mount! Pontes won't be happy about that!
Junior lands with some strikes.
Pontes tries to buck Junior off but he can't manage it.
Junior landing strikes from the mount and Pontes is in trouble!
Pontes is looking to get to half guard.
Pontes is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Junior looking to finish Pontes with some ground and pound. This is bad for Pontes!


Pontes is rocked!

Junior goes for an armbar but Pontes turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Pontes.
Junior has Pontes pulled in close to control his posture.

Junior's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Pontes closes this distance looking for a takedown but Junior circles away.

Pontes avoids a lazy jab quite easily.

Pontes throws a lazy right hand but Junior sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Junior catches Pontes with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong!
Pontes slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.
Pontes lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Junior circles away quickly and effectively.
Pontes moves away from the strike by Junior.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
The fighters circling - Pontes throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Pontes doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Junior counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jorge Junior dominated that round.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


Pontes throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Junior slips a jab from Pontes.
Junior throws a jab but it's blocked by Pontes.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Junior is defended easily by Pontes.
Pontes throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Pontes shoots for a takedown but Junior saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Junior misses with a jab, cross combination.
A telegraphed right hand from Pontes misses the target.
Pontes fails with a takedown attempt.
Junior on the wrong end of a nice hook.

Junior closes the distance and clinches.

Junior's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Junior changes levels and scores with a jab to the body.
Felipe Pontes seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Pontes moves away from the strike by Junior.
Junior closes the distance and clinches up with Pontes, looking for a takedown. Junior pushes Pontes against the cage but Pontes circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Pontes throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Junior.
Pontes shoots in for a takedown but Junior shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Jorge Junior has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Felipe Pontes.

Pontes decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Junior is pressing down on Pontes's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Pontes throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Junior works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Junior looking to hit a scissor sweep but Pontes is one step ahead there.
Pontes throws an elbow that misses. Junior uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Pontes's guard. Nice move by Junior!

Pontes had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Junior defends it easily.
Pontes is trying to control the position but Junior postures up.
Junior cracks Pontes with a solid left hand.
Junior lands a couple of elbows.
Junior with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Junior stands up over Pontes, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Junior pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Pontes is keeping the position for now.

Junior is working Pontes over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
Junior lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.

Junior is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Pontes to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Pontes shrugs it off.
Pontes tries to reverse the position but Junior maintains control.

Pontes is still in real trouble! Can Junior finish him?
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Jorge Junior overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Junior has control of Pontes's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Pontes regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Pontes seems to have recovered his senses.

Junior has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Junior connects with a picture perfect right hand that knocks Pontes out cold! This one is over in a flash!

Jorge Junior tried to hype himself up post fight but didn't word it too well and it ended up with him sounding like a bit of a tool.
