PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Armas Ruutana (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Andy Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ruutana comes into the arena with Ennio Morricone - Man With A Harmonica blaring out of the sound system. Johnson has chosen Death Before Dishonor as his entrance music. Armas Ruutana has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 14 - 15 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Armas Ruutana!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Andy Johnson!
The judges for this bout are Aafke Stam, Wagner Zegers and Daniel Blasius.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ruutana checks a low kick from Johnson.
Ruutana keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Johnson misses with a body shot.
Johnson dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Johnson connects with a good right hand that stumbles Ruutana. Ruutana circles away out of range and recomposes himself.
Nice defenses there by Ruutana.
Johnson shoots in for a takedown but Ruutana shows good takedown defense.
Johnson shoots in but no luck this time.
Johnson throws a front kick aimed at Ruutana's knee but Ruutana avoids it well.
Johnson scores with a jab to the body.
Johnson misses with a few strikes there.
Ruutana misses with an uppercut. Johnson saw that one coming.
Johnson walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
Johnson tries to score with an inside leg kick but telegraphs it and Ruutana is able to avoid easily.
Johnson slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.
Johnson throws a good cross that connects.
A swing and a miss from Johnson.
Ruutana lands a jab to the head.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Johnson tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Ruutana was well out of range. Poor timing from Johnson.
Johnson misses with a wild body shot.
Ruutana attempts a low kick but it misses it's target.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Ruutana throws a hook but Johnson blocks it.
Ruutana moves out of range of the strikes.
Johnson throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Johnson connects with a good right hand that stumbles Ruutana. Ruutana circles away out of range and recomposes himself.
Andy Johnson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Johnson throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Ruutana throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Johnson avoids a kick to the body.
Ruutana displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Johnson.
Armas Ruutana has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Andy Johnson.

Johnson closes the distance and clinches.
Ruutana gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Johnson.
Ruutana lands an elbow just above Johnson 's eye.


It looks like Andy Johnson has been cut.

Johnson lands a takedown into guard.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Ruutana tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Ruutana manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Johnson tries to buck Ruutana off but he can't manage it.
Ruutana thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!

Ruutana is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Johnson to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Johnson shrugs it off.
Ruutana can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Johnson is looking to escape.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Johnson is working to get back to half guard.
Johnson is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Ruutana misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.
Ruutana throwing sloppy strikes, which aren't doing any damage.
Johnson is looking to get to half guard.

Ruutana working for a guillotine from mount but Johnson is in no mood to give up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Johnson tries to lock up and control but Ruutana gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Ruutana is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Johnson can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Johnson can't escape the position.
Johnson wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Ruutana.
Ruutana trying to control but Johnson is having none of it.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Ruutana scoring with strikes but Johnson is staying in there.
Johnson is squirming around, avoiding Ruutana's attempts to control the action.
Johnson is looking to get to half guard.

Ruutana is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Johnson can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Ruutana prevents Johnson from getting the reversal.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Ruutana lands a nice shot to the head.
Ruutana tries to control but Johnson wriggling away.
Ruutana takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Armas Ruutana will probably get the nod.

That's time! Back to the action!



Johnson instigates a clinch.
Johnson is working for takedown but Ruutana is calmly controlling the position for now.
Ruutana lands a hook to the side of the head.
Johnson goes for a takedown attempt but Ruutana pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Johnson swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Ruutana fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
Ruutana shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.

Ruutana gets a clinch.
Ruutana prevents a takedown attempt there.
Armas Ruutana has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Andy Johnson.
Johnson tries for a takedown. No joy.
Ruutana lands a nice uppercut.
Ruutana scores with a shoulder strike.
Ruutana stops a takedown attempt from Johnson.
Ruutana lands with a good tight uppercut to the head.
Ruutana working on landing some head shots here - that one got through nicely.
Ruutana lands a short shot on the inside that snaps the head of Johnson backwards.


Johnson is rocked!
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Ruutana unloads with a big right hand that wobbles Johnson! He's leaning against the cage trying to keep his feet but Ruutana is unloading with more strikes now! Johnson drops to his knees and the referee stops the fight for a TKO!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:58 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Armas Ruutana!
A relieved looking Armas Ruutana thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
