Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Brandon Ortiz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Santiago Calirante (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Santiago Calirante!
The judges for this bout are Paul Gruel, Josh West and Jeff Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ortiz looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Calirante swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Calirante throws a predictable looking body shot
and Ortiz counters with a two punch combo.
Calirante misses with a body shot.
Ortiz blocks a jab.
Calirante takes a swing at Ortiz's ribcage but misses.
Calirante fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Ortiz manages to avoid it.
Calirante misses with an uppercut
and Ortiz counters with a nice kick to the body.
Calirante throws a shot from downtown. Ortiz moves away and avoids it.
Calirante misses with a lunging right hand
and Ortiz counters with a straight right hand.
Ortiz throws a leg kick that misses.
Calirante throws a body punch but Ortiz moves out of range.
Calirante throws a right hand that misses
and Ortiz counters with a nice uppercut.
Santiago Calirante seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Ortiz closes the distance and clinches.

A frustrated look appears on Ortiz's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Ortiz jumps guard but Calirante stands there with Ortiz around his waist. Ortiz gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Ortiz really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Calirante really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Ortiz. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Calirante tries to free his leg and advance position but Ortiz is retaining full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Calirante throws a low kick but Ortiz avoids it.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Ortiz is defended easily by Calirante.
Calirante looks to score with a jab to the body but Ortiz is just out of range.
Horrible takedown by Ortiz or perhaps it was just good defense by Calirante which made him look bad.

Ortiz drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Calirante gets the underhooks and prevents it.

Let's hope that Calirante has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Calirante stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Ortiz swivels though and keeps the full guard.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Ortiz can't keep his opponent in guard - Calirante advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Santiago Calirante showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Calirante misses with a looping left.
Calirante walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Ortiz checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.
Ortiz throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Ortiz closes the distance looking to clinch

and Calirante holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Calirante misses with a body punch.
Calirante misses with some punches.
A head punch blocked on the inside by Ortiz.
Ortiz is looking to control Calirante's arms but Calirante gets an underhook and turns him. Now Ortiz has his back to the cage.

Ortiz ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Ortiz no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Ortiz controls Calirante momentarily but Calirante frees himself.
Calirante is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Calirante must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

Santiago Calirante comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Calirante has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
