The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rich keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Thompson looks to throw the jab but Rich is out of range.
Thompson wants to clinch
and Rich counters with a body kick that brings a smile to the face of both fighters.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

Rich lands with a punch from half guard.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Rich lands a nice short elbow.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Rich is trying to control the action in half guard but Thompson is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Thompson tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.

Thompson wants to sweep here but Rich controlling him for the moment.

Thompson is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Rich defends well.

Rich stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Thompson swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Rich avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Thompson wants to sweep but no luck.

Thompson is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Rich working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound.
Rich has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Rich stands and throws Thompson's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Thompson regains half guard.
Thompson is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Rich seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Rich is looking to take a break and control but Thompson is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that D J Rich will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Rich lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.
Rich lands with a straight right. Thompson didn't see that one coming.
Rich shoots in for a takedown but Thompson shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Thompson tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Rich manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Rich connects with a good right hand that stumbles Thompson. Thompson circles away out of range and recomposes himself.

Rich tries a head kick but it misses.

and Rich counters with a three punch combo that has Thompson backing up. Thompson nods at Rich to acknowledge the strikes.
Thompson walks into a stiff left hand from Rich.
Rich lands a right hook to the body.
Thompson is looking to clinch.
Sloppy strikes from Rich. Those never looked like landing.

and Thompson counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Thompson is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.

Rich tries to improve position but can't.
Thompson misses with the ground and pound.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Thompson has worked his way into a potential kimura here. Rich is trying to get out of the position but his squirming has just got him deeper into trouble. Thompson yanks on the arm and Rich is forced to tap due to a very painful looking submission! Nice work by Thompson.

After the fight, Hunter Thompson was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
