The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Some wild striking there from Vovchanchyn.

Machida gets the takedown into side control.
Vovchanchyn tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Machida presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!

Machida jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Vovchanchyn manages to avoid the submission attempt.
Machida has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Vovchanchyn tries to buck Machida off but Machida is having none of it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Machida rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Vovchanchyn moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Machida walks straight into a right hand from Vovchanchyn - that's dropped him! Vovchanchyn jumps into mount and starts pounding away - can he finish?! More strikes go undefended and the referee has to dive in to save Machida from any more punishment! Machida complains about the stoppage but falls over as he tries to stand back up, so it was clearly a good stoppage.
