PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Hank Martin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Nick King (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Martin comes to the cage accompanied by I drink alone. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 6 - 0, fighting out of New York, Hank Martin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Nick King!
The judges for this bout are Anthony Taglia, Steve Montenegro and Jonathan Paton.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
King jabs Martin right on the nose. Martin blinks but takes it well.
Martin blocks a jab.
Martin wants to clinch up but King keeps it at a distance.
King avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Martin misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
King throws a hook to the side of Martin's head but Martin sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Martin fails with a takedown attempt.
Martin fails in his attempt to clinch.
Martin will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Hank Martin. That's going to take a lot out of him.

It looks like Nick King has been cut.
King slips a jab and a cross from Martin.

Martin tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but King paws at him with a jab and circles away.
King bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.

Martin has managed to clinch.
King lands an uppercut.
Martin is looking for a takedown up against the cage. King gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Martin breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Martin will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

King tries to keep at a distance but Martin has taken the fight into the clinch.
King takes an elbow to the forehead.

Martin pulls King into guard.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Martin looking to control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Martin manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. King manages to get himself to full guard.
King controls Martin momentarily but Martin frees himself.
King looking to hit a scissor sweep but Martin is one step ahead there.

Martin not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Hank Martin just wasn't active enough.
Martin throws a shot from downtown. King moves away and avoids it.
Martin tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but King swivels and escapes.
Nick King is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Martin fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

King slaps away a takedown attempt from Martin, before circling back to the center of the mat.
King throws a big shot that misses.
Martin tries to clinch up
and King counters with a stiff right hand.
Martin shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says King as he avoids it easily.
Martin takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Martin shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts King as he jumps to the side.
Martin is breathing heavily.
King throws the left hand but Martin avoids the punch easily.
Martin changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. King tries to avoid it but Martin manages to keep hold of a leg and drag King to the ground. King escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
King scores with a hook to the body. Martin takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.
Martin on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere.
Martin will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
King swats away the attempt to clinch by Martin.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Hank Martin will probably get the nod.

Martin moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.
Martin shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with King but King pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Martin has a takedown stuffed.
King throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
King lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head.
Martin tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. King manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Martin is defended easily by King.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Hank Martin. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Martin closes this distance looking for a takedown but King circles away.
Hank Martin is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
King misses with a hook. Martin ducked under it nicely.
King might want to mix his strikes up a bit more. He's just going for head shots at the moment and that can become a bit predictable.
Martin shoots in but King avoids the takedown attempt easily.
King keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

King cracks Martin with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage.

Nick King seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Martin moves out of range of the strikes.

Martin shoots in looking for a takedown. King tries to sprawl out of it but Martin keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. King manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
King throws a jab but it's blocked by Martin.

Martin misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

Martin falls off balance throwing a combination
and King counters with a straight right hand.

Martin closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

King is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Martin is keeping busy.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

King tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Martin presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!

That was a close second round but I would say that Hank Martin will probably get the nod.

and Martin counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Martin.

Martin goes for a takedown attempt but King pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Martin shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. King defends it nicely.

King keeps the fight on the outside.
Martin tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

and Martin counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for King!
This has been an exciting period of action!
King holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Martin tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Hank Martin.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Martin, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Hank Martin spent the whole post fight interview bigging himself up. It didn't go down that well with the fans after a while as they thought it was a bit arrogant.
