PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Jack Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Anton Pashurinko (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Anton Pashurinko told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 18 - 19 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Jack Johnson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Anton Pashurinko!
The judges for this bout are Jeff Smith, Micheangelo Fripello and Paul Gruel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Johnson gets a takedown into half guard.

Johnson has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Pashurinko is trying is best to control the position here.

Pashurinko is looking to control Johnson's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Pashurinko avoid being mounted?
Johnson is trying to control the action in half guard but Pashurinko is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Johnson connects with a nice short shot to Pashurinko's temple.

Johnson looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Pashurinko with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Johnson is looking for a kimura but Pashurinko is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Johnson to get the leverage.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Johnson drops back looking for a leg! Pashurinko is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Pashurinko manages to kick Johnson off! Johnson jumps back into Pashurinko's guard.

Johnson wants to control from the top but Pashurinko keeps moving.

Johnson is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Pashurinko knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Johnson goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Pashurinko rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Johnson's guard! Nice work there by Pashurinko!

Pashurinko is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Johnson can't keep his opponent in guard - Pashurinko advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Pashurinko is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Johnson is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Johnson has escaped and now he's on top!

Johnson is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Johnson is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Pashurinko is on top in guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Jack Johnson will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Johnson lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.

and Pashurinko takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Pashurinko shoots for a takedown but Johnson saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Jack Johnson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Anton Pashurinko.

Johnson fails to land with a series of punches.
Pashurinko takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Johnson looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Johnson comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.
Johnson fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Pashurinko avoids it really well and circles away.

No luck with that takedown attempt from Pashurinko.

Johnson wants to lay and pray for a moment but Pashurinko keeps working.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

Johnson is nestled in close to Pashurinko, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

Johnson ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Johnson no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

After the fight, Jack Johnson was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
