PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Fernando Maia (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Katsuo Takeda (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Takeda has chosen Warrior Asylum by Disturbed as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Well, I have no idea who's going to take this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Fernando Maia!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Katsuo Takeda!
The judges for this bout are Albert Achterberg, Radbod Blank and Saam Ante.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Maia misses with a left hand
letting Takeda counter with a right hand.
Takeda uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Maia.
Takeda slips a straight right by Maia.
Maia throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Maia misses the body punch
and Takeda counters with a left to the body.
Takeda thuds his right hand into Maia's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
Maia misses with an uppercut
and Takeda counters with a left to the body.

Takeda gets a double leg takedown into Maia's guard.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Takeda trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Takeda is looking to work some ground and pound but Maia has wrist control.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Takeda accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Takeda trying to control but Maia is working from the bottom.
Maia is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Takeda keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Maia is trying to control. Takeda wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Takeda has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Maia controlling the pace.
Maia throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Maia wants to control but Takeda is keeping him busy.
Maia is figuring out what he wants to do next.

Fernando Maia has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.

and Takeda counters with a lovely shot to the body.

No joy there for Maia, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Maia shoots in but no luck this time.

Maia gets caught napping as Takeda dives in and scores a takedown. Maia manages to retain guard.
Takeda in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Maia wants to sweep but no luck.
Takeda postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Takeda trying to control the position from guard on top but Maia is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Takeda is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
Takeda working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

Maia not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Takeda wants to control from the top but Maia keeps moving.
Takeda trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Takeda scores with a body shot.
Maia misses with a left hand
and Takeda connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Maia gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Takeda decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Maia's guard.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Fernando Maia. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Takeda throws a strike but Maia rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Maia controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Takeda tries to land a sweep but no joy.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Maia accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Maia stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Takeda swivels though and keeps the full guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Takeda is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Maia throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Takeda works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Takeda is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Maia throwing strikes from guard but Takeda blocks nicely.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Katsuo Takeda dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Maia misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Takeda fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Maia avoids it really well and circles away.
Takeda fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Takeda shoots for a takedown but Maia saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Fernando Maia has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Katsuo Takeda.
Maia misses the shot to the body.
Maia is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Takeda.

Takeda lands with a shot to the body.
Maia walks into a straight right hand from Takeda.
Takeda throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Maia stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
Takeda connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt.
Maia swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Nice defenses there by Takeda.
Takeda lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.
Takeda shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Maia pinned against the cage. Maia gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Maia throws a lazy uppercut

and Takeda counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Takeda with the ground and pound but Maia uses the opportunity to regain guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Maia keeping moving, preventing Takeda from controlling successfully.
Maia wants to stand and escape but Takeda is having none of it.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Maia controls Takeda momentarily but Takeda frees himself.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Maia misses with a right hand

so Takeda counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Takeda in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Maia utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Maia is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Katsuo Takeda has got the better of the ground game so far.
Takeda wants to control from the top but Maia keeps moving.
Takeda trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Takeda throws a strike but Maia rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Takeda escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Maia gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Takeda wants to sweep but no luck.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Takeda is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Takeda keeping moving, preventing Maia from controlling successfully.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Takeda had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Maia defends it easily.
Takeda controls Maia momentarily but Maia frees himself.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Katsuo Takeda showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. And we move into the final round!


Maia walks into a left hand.
Maia looks to land a left hand but Takeda moved out of range nicely.
Takeda's corner calls for a 1-2. Takeda obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
Maia misses with a jab to the body
and Takeda counters with a nice body shot.
Maia keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Maia throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
Maia misses with a jab, cross combination.
Takeda ducks under a wild hook from Maia.

Maia misses with a telegraphed body shot
and Takeda counters with a nice uppercut.
Takeda throws a right and a left that both miss.
Maia scores with a sloppy right hand. Takeda should have avoided that one.
Fernando Maia seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Takeda checks a low kick. Bone on bone - not my idea of a good time.
A telegraphed right hand from Maia misses the target.
Takeda fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Maia avoids it really well and circles away.
Takeda takes a swing at Maia's ribcage but misses.
Takeda throws a shot to the body.
Fernando Maia has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Maia misses the jab.
Takeda shoots in and drives through. Maia sprawls well.
Fernando Maia has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Katsuo Takeda.
Maia lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.

Takeda gets a takedown into half guard.

Takeda is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Maia defends it well.
Maia is looking to improve his position.

Maia is defending against the submission attempts here by Takeda.
Takeda not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Maia wants to get back to full guard.
Takeda is just content to waste time from the top position. Maia takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.

Takeda throws a big right hand that misses.
Takeda with a flurry of punches that miss.
Maia wants to stand up but Takeda is controlling him.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Maia utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Takeda throws a strike but Maia rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Maia avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Takeda escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Maia gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

And that's the end of the fight!
Katsuo Takeda comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Takeda winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
