PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Dan Akari (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Akihiro Shirasu (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Akihiro Shirasu struggled to make weight for this fight. He only made it down to 206.4lbs at the first attempt and had to take the additional two hours to make the official bout weight. Let's see how much it's taken out of him. The key to victory for Dan Akari has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Dan Akari!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Akihiro Shirasu!
The judges for this bout are , Jack Bonds and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Akari misses with a takedown
enabling Shirasu to counter with a crisp jab.
Akari tries to clinch but Shirasu moves out of range.

Shirasu shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Akari's guard.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

Akari had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Shirasu defends it easily.

Shirasu wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Akari is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Shirasu is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Shirasu has escaped and now he's on top!

Akari has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Shirasu is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Akari.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Akari working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Shirasu doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Shirasu manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Akari gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Shirasu counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Shirasu has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Akari uses from the top position.

Akari is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Akari drops back, looking for a kneebar! Shirasu looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Shirasu looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Shirasu!

Shirasu decides to stand back up. Shirasu steps back and let's Akari get back to his feet.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Let's hope that Shirasu has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Akari enables Shirasu to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Akari manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Well Shirasu has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
