PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Mica Makaaja (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Juan Chavez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Makaaja comes to the cage accompanied by BassLovers United - I Can't Dance. The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Mica Makaaja!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 21 - 22 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Juan Chavez!
The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Steve Smith and William Peck.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Chavez is looking to score with low kicks.
Chavez throws a lazy right hand but Makaaja sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Makaaja fails with a takedown attempt.
Makaaja throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Chavez's waist but Chavez gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Makaaja off to one side.
Chavez pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Juan Chavez seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Chavez dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
A looping hook to the body misses from Chavez. Makaaja does a little dance to reset his feet.
Chavez fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Makaaja manages to avoid it.
Chavez will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Makaaja doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Chavez counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mica Makaaja. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Chavez lands a lovely overhand right.
Makaaja fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Chavez misses with the combination.
Makaaja tries to close the distance and clinch up but Chavez swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Makaaja displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Chavez throws out the jab.
Chavez throws a predictable looking body shot

and Makaaja counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Chavez is looking to improve his position.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Makaaja is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Chavez is just riding it out for now. Makaaja eventually gives up the hold.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Chavez is looking for a sweep. Makaaja is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Makaaja is thwarting Chavez's attempts to control the position.
Chavez gets back to full guard.

Chavez has his foot on Makaaja's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Makaaja works his way back into a safe position though.
Chavez keeping moving, preventing Makaaja from controlling successfully.
Chavez manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Makaaja manages to get himself to full guard.

Makaaja is working for submissions here. He's thrown up his legs looking for a triangle but Chavez frees his head nicely. Oh but Makaaja has switched to an armbar! Chavez is tapping furiously! Lovely submission there!

An out of breath Mica Makaaja thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
