PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Crin Antonescu (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Darrion James (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, Crin Antonescu!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Darrion James!
The judges for this bout are John Mangel, Winston Howard and Summer Carpenter.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Antonescu misses with a double jab.
Antonescu shoots in and drives through. James sprawls well.
We're hearing some news coming in from back stage. It's official - James has eaten all the pies!
James rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Antonescu counters with a straight right hand.
James takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.


It looks like Crin Antonescu has been cut.
Antonescu connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head.
James swings widly with a right hand

and Antonescu counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
James takes an elbow to the temple.


It looks like Darrion James has been cut.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Antonescu manages to break the clinch.
James shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Antonescu as he jumps to the side.
James throws a jab when Antonescu was well out of range.
Antonescu fails in his attempt to clinch.

Antonescu leaves James with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Crin Antonescu has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Darrion James.

James shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Antonescu napping and manages to drive through into side control!

That's one minute gone in the round.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
James creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Antonescu sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.

James decides to stand up, so the ref orders Antonescu to his feet.

James shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. James showed some decent athleticism there.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. James connects with a nice short shot to Antonescu's temple.

Antonescu is controlling James's position as best he can from this difficult position.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Antonescu won't allow James to pass to mount.

James seems to be looking for submissions.

Antonescu is working an open guard so James takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
James leaves Antonescu with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
James slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.
Antonescu blocks a jab.
James throws an overhand right that lands on Antonescu's shoulder, as Antonescu tries to avoid the shot.
Antonescu takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt.

James shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Antonescu napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Antonescu is working to avoid the ground and pound but James connects with a decent elbow.
Antonescu is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

James is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Antonescu is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

James fails to land a wild elbow strike.

James throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
James missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Darrion James dominated that round.
Both fighters have cut men working on them during the interval.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


James misses with a looping right.
James pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
James fakes a jab and then connects with a hook.
Antonescu throws a nice outside leg kick.
Antonescu closes the distance and clinches up with James, looking for a takedown. Antonescu pushes James against the cage but James circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
James missing with a left hand there. Antonescu was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
James tries for a takedown but Antonescu sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Antonescu throws a right and a left that both miss.
Antonescu moves out of range of the strikes.
Antonescu shoots in for a double leg but James sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
James throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
James changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Antonescu tries to avoid it but James manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Antonescu to the ground. Antonescu escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
James rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Antonescu moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Antonescu throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around James's waist but James gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Antonescu off to one side.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Crin Antonescu. That's going to take a lot out of him.
James misses with a double jab

and Antonescu holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Antonescu pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Antonescu thows a body kick. James tries to catch it but that hurt him.

Antonescu closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
James is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Antonescu's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Antonescu's back!
James thows a strike but Antonescu uses the opportunity to reverse the position! Great move by Antonescu as he ends up in James 's guard!
James is looking to stand up but Antonescu isn't so interested in that idea.

James throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Antonescu escapes and throws James's legs to the side, diving into side control!
James tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Antonescu presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
James is wriggling around trying to escape.
James sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
James tries to roll over but Antonescu keeps him under control.

Antonescu is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so James is just riding it out for now. Antonescu eventually gives up the hold.

Antonescu wants to lay and pray for a moment but James keeps working.

James is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Antonescu pulls his head out easily.
Antonescu is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
James is staying active underneath Antonescu, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Antonescu stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows James to get to his feet.

Antonescu manages to get an easy takedown there - catching James on his heels. He'll look to pass James's guard now, I'm sure.

James working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Antonescu doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Antonescu manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
James is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Antonescu gets to his feet - James follows without any prompting.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Both fighters have cut men working on them during the interval.
That's time! Antonescu's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Antonescu stuffs the takedown.
Antonescu lands a nice hook to James's body. James takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
James shoots in looking for a takedown but Antonescu manages to keep the fight standing, pushing James's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Antonescu moves into the clinch successfully.

Antonescu breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Antonescu moves away from the strike by James.
Crin Antonescu is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Sloppy strikes from Antonescu. Those never looked like landing.
Nice sprawl there from Antonescu as James shoots in.
Crin Antonescu has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Darrion James.

James shoots in and drives through. Antonescu sprawls well.
Antonescu feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Jamess jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!

Antonescu has James up against the cage in a clinch.

Antonescu jumps into guard, dragging James to the mat.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
James wants to get up but he can't break Antonescu's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

James trying to move into half guard but instead Antonescu has managed to sweep!

James is pressing down on Antonescu's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

James has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Antonescu is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for James.
Darrion James has got the better of the ground game so far.
James wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Antonescu is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
James is trying to get back to half guard.

Antonescu looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Antonescu remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

James manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!

James pushes Antonescu off and gets back to his feet.
James shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Antonescu but Antonescu pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Antonescu instigates a clinch.
Antonescu manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.
Still in the clinch, James scores with a nice short uppercut.

A short right hand to the side of the head by James.

Antonescu manages to break the clinch.

James manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Antonescu on his heels. He'll look to pass Antonescu's guard now, I'm sure.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

James throws a strike but Antonescu rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

James is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Antonescu stands and steps away. James gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Crin Antonescu.
I think Antonescu has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
