The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mendes shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Cottero but Cottero pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Cottero leaves Mendes with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Cottero lands a nice looking kick to the body. Mendes takes a step back to recover.
Mendes throws a head kick but Cottero moves out of range.
Cottero tries to land a front kick but Mendes steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Mendes takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
The fight stays on the outside here - Mendes looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
That kick from Cottero tenderised Mendes's leg. Mendes is trying to keep his angry face on.
Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Cottero lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Mendes has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Mendes and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.

Cottero connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son.

Cottero fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Mendes on the side of the head.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Cottero.

Mendes tries to clinch but Cottero is having none of it.

Nice uppercut lands for Cottero. That snapped Mendes's head back.
This is turning into a torrid day at the office for Mendes. He's trying desperately to land a takedown but he's failing miserably and getting slapped silly on the feet to compound his misery.

Cottero gets caught flat footed, as Mendes shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Cottero is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Cottero is fighting to break Mendes's control of his arms but Mendes is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

With the fighters clinched against the cage, Cottero creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut.
