PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Nik Volkov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Samuraimo Rassi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 20 - 10 - 1, fighting out of Hilo, Nik Volkov!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 8 - 1, fighting out of Hilo, Samuraimo Rassi!
The judges for this bout are Shirou Masuda, Shigeki Sano and Hirohito Nitta.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Volkov on the wrong end of a kick to the body.
Volkov throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Rassi paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.
Rassi looks to land a combination. Volkov sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
Volkov misses with a jab, cross combination.
Rassi tries to clinch up.
Rassi lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Volkov circles away quickly and effectively.
Rassi tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Volkov takes a swing at Rassi's ribcage but misses.
Volkov tests Rassi's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Volkov throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Rassi sees it coming and avoids it easily.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Rassi moves out of range of the leg kick from Volkov.
Volkov displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Rassi throws out the jab.
Rassi lands a kick to the ribs of his opponent. Nice work there - in and out in a flash.
Rassi tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Volkov paws at him with a jab and circles away.
A slapping body kick lands there for Rassi.
Volkov tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Rassi was well out of range. Poor timing from Volkov.

Rassi moves into the clinch successfully.
Volkov working hard to break the clinch.

Rassi escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Rassi drives through and clinches with Volkov against the cage.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Volkov is trying to push Rassi away but Rassi has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
A shot in the inside from Rassi.
Volkov is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Rassi breaks the clinch.
Rassi lands with a good body shot.
Samuraimo Rassi is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Rassi closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

Rassi breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Volkov shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Rassi eats them both and turns towards Volkov to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.
Volkov thows a body shot but no joy.
Rassi wants to clinch.
Rassi lands a high kick!


It looks like Nik Volkov has been cut.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Rassi fails in his attempt to clinch.
Volkov lands with a shot to the body.
Volkov throws a right hand that Rassi ducks under and follows up with a left that Rassi also avoids with ease.
Rassi tries to clinch
and Volkov counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Rassi misses with a wild body shot.
Volkov takes a swing at Rassi's ribcage but misses.
Volkov moves into range and connects with a jab.
Rassi steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Volkov.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Rassi tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Volkov manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Volkov shoots in but Rassi avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Volkov misses the body punch

and Rassi holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Rassi lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.

Rassi manages to break the clinch.
Rassi will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Rassi just misses with a punch to the body.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Volkov fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Rassi is out of range.
Volkov misses with a few strikes there.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Samuraimo Rassi dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Nik Volkov's cut.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Volkov throws the left hand but Rassi avoids the punch easily.
Volkov throws a series of punches but Rassi avoids them all with ease.
Volkov lands with an uppercut that bounces Rassi off the cage and back into range.

Rassi clinches up against the cage.
Volkov is looking to break free of the clinch but Rassi has double underhooks.
Volkov wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Rassi can't find room to land a body shot as Volkov controls the action.
Come on Rassi - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.
A body shot lands from Rassi.
Volkov wants to break the clinch but can't.

Rassi breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Volkov throws a jab when Rassi was well out of range.

Rassi doesn't manage to clinch there - Volkov circles away.
Volkov digs a good hook to Rassi's body.
Volkov misses with a head kick.
Rassi delivers a nice body kick.
Volkov throws a sloppy head kick

and Rassi counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Rassi.

Rassi's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Rassi throws a sloppy head kick and Volkov moves out of range easily.

Volkov throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Rassi.
Samuraimo Rassi seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Volkov throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

Volkov is rocked!
This has been an exciting period of action!
Volkov throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Oh Volkov is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Rassi takes one to the side of the head.
Volkov seems to have got his legs back now.
Rassi throws a right hand that misses
and Volkov counters with a nice uppercut.
Rassi wants to clinch up but Volkov keeps it at a distance.
Rassi throws a lazy right hand but Volkov sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Volkov fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

Volkov gets off balance looking for a body kick
and Rassi counters with a right hand to the body.
Volkov misses with an uppercut.
Rassi throws a series of punches but Volkov moves out of range.
Volkov lands a body shot.
Rassi lands a jab.
Rassi tries to clinch there but Volkov circles away.
Rassi looks to land a left hand but Volkov moved out of range nicely.
Volkov lands a slapping body shot.

Rassi throws a sloppy head kick and Volkov moves out of range easily.
Volkov throws the left hand but Rassi avoids the punch easily.
Volkov misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Rassi.
Volkov with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Rassi to score with a decent uppercut.

and Rassi counters with a nice leg kick.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Volkov is looking for a takedown.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
An uppercut to the body lands inside from Rassi.

Rassi pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Rassi tries to sprawl but Volkov drives through with a takedown into half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Samuraimo Rassi showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!



Rassi closes the distance and pushes Volkov back into the cage.
Rassi lands a shoulder strike.

Rassi escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Volkov thows a body shot but no joy.
Left hook, right uppercut from Volkov.

Volkov closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Volkov misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Volkov creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Rassi sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
Volkov has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Volkov thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Volkov tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.

Volkov throws a strike aimed at the side of Rassi's head but Rassi avoids it well.
Rassi is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Volkov has just dragged him back down to the mat.

Volkov wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Rassi, who protects the arm well.

Volkov thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Volkov swings around for an armbar but Rassi sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Volkov's guard.
Volkov wants to sweep but no luck.
Rassi wants to stand but Volkov has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Volkov is trying to keep Rassi in close.

Samuraimo Rassi is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Rassi decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Rassi lands a nice looking kick to the body. Volkov takes a step back to recover.
Volkov throws a nice looking combination but Rassi bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

Volkov rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Rassi moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Rassi wants to clinch up but Volkov keeps it at a distance.
Rassi fakes a jab and then connects with a hook.
Volkov takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.
Volkov stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Rassi.
Volkov wants to land a leg kick but Rassi is out of range.
Volkov walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.
Volkov throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Rassi wants to clinch up but Volkov keeps it at a distance.
Nik Volkov has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Volkov fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Rassi manages to avoid it.

And that's the end of the fight!
Nik Volkov showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Rassi has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
