PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Sho Shinjo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Julio Sobral (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Shinjo's entrance music is Theme of Sho. A fine choice. Sho Shinjo has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 15 - 10 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Sho Shinjo!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 16 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Julio Sobral!
The judges for this bout are Edson Gomes, Seu Braga and Thiago Cunha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shinjo slips a straight right by Sobral.
Shinjo just misses with a punch to the body.
Nice defenses there by Shinjo.
Shinjo avoids the body shot from Sobral.
Sobral looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Shinjo is fending him off so far but Sobral persists. Nope, Shinjo circles away and we're back to standing.
Shinjo connects with a nice looking jab.
Shinjo throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Sobral lands with an uppercut that bounces Shinjo off the cage and back into range.

Sobral bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
The strikes coming from Sobral are missing the target in this wave of attacks.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Shinjo has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Sobral is not content to let Shinjo control the position.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Sho Shinjo will probably get the nod.
That's time! Shinjo's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Sloppy strikes from Sobral. Those never looked like landing.
Sobral tries to check the leg kick but that clearly hurt him.
A punch lands to the side of Sobral 's head but he takes it in his stride.
Shinjo fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Sobral.
Sobral cracks Shinjo with a good jab.
Shinjo lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Sobral circles away quickly and effectively.

Shinjo shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Sobral is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Shinjo looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Sobral with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Sho Shinjo just wasn't active enough.

Shinjo is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Sobral is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Shinjo is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Sobral stands up over his opponent, looking to dive in with a big punch. Here he comes, superman style! Oh, the punch misses and Shinjo has got him in a triangle choke for good measure! Oh no! Sobral manages to get his head free but now Shinjo has transitioned to an armbar! Sobral grimaces and is forced to tap! Beautiful Jiu Jitsu from Shinjo! I'd be surprised if that didn't end up as submission of the night!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:55 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Sho Shinjo!
Sho Shinjo seemed lost for words in his post fight interview but he remembered to thank his fans and directed everyone to his website.
