PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Hector Cabrera (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jose Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). There are an array of beautiful celebrities at ringside tonight! I wonder if any of them paid for their tickets.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Hector Cabrera!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jose Smith!
The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, Tiny Johnson and Chris Downing.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith waving his hands out infront of him, looking to distract Cabrera.
Cabrera misses with a two punch combination.
Cabrera closes the distance and clinches up with Smith, looking for a takedown. Cabrera pushes Smith against the cage but Smith circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Cabrera throws a combination. Smith tries to block but a couple of punches get through.
Horrible takedown by Cabrera or perhaps it was just good defense by Smith which made him look bad.
Cabrera shoots in for a takedown but Smith shows good takedown defense.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Hector Cabrera. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Smith misses with a combination

and Cabrera counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Cabrera trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Smith avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Cabrera connects with a couple of short punches.
Cabrerais looking to pass into half guard but Smith pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Smith is in guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Cabrera wants to get back to full guard but Smith has mounted him!

Smith tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Smith controlling the position easily from mount.
Smith prevents Cabrera from getting the reversal.

Smith controlling the pace.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Cabrera is looking to improve his position.

Cabrera is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Smith pulls his head out easily.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Cabrera tries to regain full guard. Instead though, Smith has advanced to mount. Uh oh.
Cabrera is working to get back to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Cabrera takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.

Cabrera closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Cabrera thows a big elbow that misses, also allowing Smith to regain full guard.
Smith wants to stand but Cabrera is controlling the position.

Cabrera drops back, looking for a kneebar! Smith looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Smith looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Smith!

Cabrera is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Smith is one step ahead and moves to full mount!

Cabrera is wriggling around trying to escape.
Smith can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Cabrera is looking to escape.
Cabrera is trying desperately to improve position.
Smith looking to control and managing it successfully.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Cabrera is wriggling around trying to escape.
Smith trying to control but Cabrera is having none of it.
Cabrera is looking to improve his position but Smith isn't that keen on the idea.
Cabrera bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Smith uses the cage to get back to his feet.
Cabrera will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Smith misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Cabrera.

Cabrera closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Cabrera lands in his opponent's guard.
Cabrera trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Cabrera drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Smith manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Cabrera has Smith in his guard.

Smith is looking to stand up but Cabrera won't let him.

Cabrera has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Smith can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Cabrera looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Cabrera looking for a sweep. Not yet Cabrera, not yet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Hector Cabrera will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Cabrera fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Cabrera moves away from the strike by Smith.

Cabrera drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Cabrera prevents Smith from getting back to his feet.

Cabrera drops back, looking for a kneebar! Smith looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Smith looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Smith!

Cabrera is looking to improve his position.

Cabrera pushes Smith off and gets back to his feet.
Smith misses with a telegraphed body shot

and Cabrera counters with a takedown into side control.

Cabrera goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Smith rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Cabrera's guard! Nice work there by Smith!

Cabrera has an active guard here but Smith has managed to pass into half guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Cabrera wants to get back to full guard but Smith has mounted him!

Smith takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Cabrera can't escape the position.
Cabrera swinging wildly from the bottom but he's not landing.
Cabrera throwing hammer fists to the chest of Smith. What's that going to do exactly?
Cabrera is trying to escape the mount.
Smith controlling from mount.
Cabrera bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

Hector Cabrera clearly takes that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.



Cabrera closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Cabrera lands in his opponent's guard.
Cabrera working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Cabrera pushing down on Smith's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
Smith keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Cabrera moves nicely into side control.

Cabrera goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Smith has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Cabrera but great work by Smith.
Cabrera is looking for a sweep.

Cabrera regains half guard.
Cabrera makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Cabrera.

Cabrera escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Smith gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
It's got to the stage where if one of these guys blows hard enough, the other might fall over.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Cabrera had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Smith is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Cabrera Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Smith's back instead.
Smith is trying to get back to his feet but he's not managed it yet.
Cabrera thows a huge left but connects with the canvas and not his opponent.

Smith is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Cabrera gets his way!
Smith wriggles onto his back under a barage of strikes.

Cabrera won't let Smith get back to his feet... He wants to keep the fight where it is for now.
Cabrera throwing sloppy strikes, which aren't doing any damage.

Cabrera is working for a guillotine from mount but Smith frees his head quite easily.
Smith is trying to stand up.
Cabrera wants to take Smith's back here but Smith is holding on to an arm, himself looking to escape.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Cabrera throwing strikes but Smith recovers to half guard. A much better position.
Smith avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Cabrera.
Cabrera trying to pass the guard but Smith defending well.
Smith wants to get back to his feet.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Cabrera is working for a kimura but Smith is defending it quite comfortably.

Cabrera is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Smith defends it well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Hector Cabrera had his way with Jose Smith in that round.
That's time! Cabrera's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Smith misses with a double jab

and Cabrera counters with a shoot takedown. Smith fights it but they end up in guard.

Cabrera postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Smith is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Cabrera, into his guard.
Cabrera lands a decent punch to the body there.

Cabrera working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Smith doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Smith manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Cabrera lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Smith!

Smith is trying to stand up.
Smith is wobbling all over the place through exhaustion. Will he make it to the final bell?

Cabrera goes for an armbar but Smith turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Smith.

Cabrera escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Smith gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Cabrera is on top in guard.
Jose Smith has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Cabrera postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Cabrera looking to pass the guard.
Cabrera trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Cabrera passes Smith's right leg, so he's now in half guard.

Smith makes his way to full guard, as Cabrera worked for a kimura.
Cabrera stands up over Smith, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Cabrera throws and elbow that misses. Smith uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Cabrera's guard. Nice move by Smith!
Cabrera wants to hit a switch here but Smith passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Cabrera there!
Cabrera tries to get back to half guard but can't.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Smith trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Cabrera is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Hector Cabrera showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Cabrera, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
