PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Josh Barnett (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Armor King (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). King has chosen Armor King as his entrance music. Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Josh Barnett!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Armor King!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, George Francis and Cecil Peabody.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Barnett shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
King tries to roll over but Barnett keeps him under control.
Barnett passes into side control, despite King's attempt to control the position.
You can see the frustration on King's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
King is looking for a sweep.
Barnett just content to control the position.
King trying to control but Barnett flips him over like a cheap hooker and has his back!

That's one minute gone in the round.
King is trying to get back to his feet but Barnett has full control of the position and if anything, King has just worked his way into a worse spot.
King is trying to break free.

Barnett is staying calm and holding on to the back position, whilst working on a rear naked choke. King is defending well though. Barnett let's go of the attempt for now.

King is in all sorts of trouble here.
King is squirming around, avoiding Barnett's attempts to control the action.
King is looking to improve his position but Barnett isn't that keen on the idea.

Barnett pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.

Barnett with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
King regains half guard.

Barnett tries to stand but his hand is stuck under King.
King trying to control but Barnett postures up.

King has a hand on Barnett's thigh, trying to get back to full guard. Barnett takes advantage of the position though and mounts him!
King tries to reverse the position but Barnett maintains control.

Barnett moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, King has worked his arm free - good work by King!
Barnett tries to advance to mount but can't.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
King is looking to reverse the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Josh Barnett will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Barnett shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and King counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.

Barnett has King up against the cage in a clinch.

King pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

King feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Barnett is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

King stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Barnett swivels though and keeps the full guard.

King advances to half guard.
Barnett tries to get to full guard but King has control of the leg.
King throws a strike but Barnett avoids it easily and moves to full guard.
King trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

King trying to control the position from guard on top but Barnett is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

King looking to sit in guard and control but Barnett gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

King is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Barnett is aware though and is defending well.
Barnett is working King over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Barnett wants to stand but King has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

King is looking for a triangle but Barnett pushes his legs off easily.

King keeping moving, preventing Barnett from controlling successfully.

Barnett stands up from guard. Let's bang!
King fails with a takedown attempt.
King gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Barnett holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Barnett is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. King can't fight it off and eventually Barnett manages to take the fight to the floor. King looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
King tries to land a sweep but no joy.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Barnett with a flurry of punches that miss.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Armor King will probably get the nod - 10:9.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!


Barnett wants to clinch up but King keeps it at a distance.
King keeps the fight on the outside.
King tries to clinch up.
King fails with a takedown attempt.

Barnett closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into King's guard.
King looking to control.
Barnett tries to free his leg and advance position but King is retaining full guard.
King looking to hit a scissor sweep but Barnett is one step ahead there.
King is trying to hold Barnett in close to prevent damage but Barnett has managed to pass into half guard.
Barnett prevents King from improving his position.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Barnett lands with a punch from half guard.

King looking for submissions off his back.
King is looking to control Barnett's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can King avoid being mounted?
Barnett is trying to control. King wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Barnett here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Barnett takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Josh Barnett.
King tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Barnett swivels and escapes.
King changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Barnett tries to avoid it but King manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Barnett to the ground. Barnett escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Josh Barnett has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Armor King.
King wants to clinch but Barnett slips to the side
and Barnett counters with a left and a right that stings King.
King takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Barnett lands a jab.
Barnett looks for a takedown but King sprawls well.
Barnett throws a body kick, spinning off balance
and King counters with a flying knee. Nice.
Barnett lands with a nice body kick.
Barnett fails with a takedown attempt.
No luck for King with that takedown attempt.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
King goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.

Barnett gets in close and instigates a clinch.
King is trying to break free.

King pulls guard effortlessly.
Barnett showing good wrestling skills to control the position.
King is trying to control the position but Barnett postures up.

Barnett stands and steps away. King gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
King shoots in for a takedown but Barnett shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Barnett closes this distance looking for a takedown but King circles away.
King throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Barnett moves into the clinch successfully.
King looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
A frustrated look appears on King's face as he tries to break the clinch.

King successfully pulls guard.
Barnett pushes down on King's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
King has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Barnett is working away from the top position though.

And that's the end of the fight!
Josh Barnett showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Barnett has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
