The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kolano rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Lapuz moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Kolano fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Lapuz looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.

Lapuz throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Kolano was covering up waiting for the punch and Lapuz finishes the takedown easily into guard.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

Lapuz drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Lapuz jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Lapuz has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Lapuz drops back, looking for a kneebar! Kolano looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Kolano looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Kolano!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by John Lapuz.
Lapuz has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.

Lapuz is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Kolano doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Lapuz.

Lapuz is looking for a kimura but Kolano is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Lapuz to get the leverage.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Lapuz is working for a kimura from half guard. He's really concentrating on the hold and it's allowed Kolano to slip a leg under and get back to full guard.

I think Lapuz has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
