PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between John Connor (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Marlo Froch (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Connor comes to the cage accompanied by Ça vaut mieux que d'attraper la scarlatine by Ray Venture. Froch has chosen Can't be touched as his entrance music. The fight MMA fans around the world have waited their entire lives for!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 30 - 22 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, John Connor!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 21 - 14 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Marlo Froch!
The judges for this bout are Alec Ball, Ian Loll and Robert Douchet.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Froch misses with a looping right.
Froch lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!
Froch misses with a few strikes there.
Connor shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Froch sprawls well. Froch wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Connor gets slowly back to his feet.

Connor closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Froch did well to prevent Connor getting side control.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

Connor is looking for a kimura but Froch is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Connor to get the leverage.
Froch is looking to improve his position.
Froch wants to get back to his feet.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Connor connects with a nice short shot to Froch's temple.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Connor is trying to control. Froch wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Froch wants to get back to his feet.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Froch gets full guard.
Froch wants to sweep here but Connor controlling him for the moment.
Froch wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Connor manages to pass to side control.
Connor is taking a breather. Froch says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Connor is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

Connor moves into full mount! Froch won't be happy about that!
Connor lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
Froch holds on for dear life.
Connor lands a couple of good shots and Froch has given up his back, trying to escape the position!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Connor is looking cool and calm here, just waiting for a good opportunity to attack and finish the fight from this dominant position.
Froch tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!

Connor has control of Froch's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Froch regains control of the situation pretty easily.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Froch is really trying hard to get back to his feet.
Connor lands a heavy elbow.
Connor prevents Froch from getting the reversal.
Connor with the ground and pound from mount.
Connor trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Froch squirming around on the bottom, looking to escape.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Connor looking to control but Froch is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Connor has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Froch's face.
Connor is landing with some decent strikes but Froch is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Froch throws a right and a left that Connor avoids nicely.
Connor fails with a takedown attempt.
Froch misses the shot to the body.
Froch takes one on the chin but seems OK.
Froch lands a jab to Connor's midsection.
Connor misses with a hook.
A left lands for Froch.
Connor uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Froch.
Froch throws a right and a left that Connor avoids nicely.
Connor misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Froch misses with a few strikes there.
Connor will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for John Connor. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Froch tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Connor manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Froch clobbers Connor with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
No luck for Connor with that takedown attempt.
John Connor seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Froch scores with a body shot.
Froch keeps the fight on the outside.
Froch misses with a double jab.
Froch lands a glancing blow to the side of Connor's head.
Connor shoots for a takedown but Froch saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Marlo Froch is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Froch swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
No joy there for Froch, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Connor shoots in but no luck this time.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Connor tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Froch swivels and escapes.
Froch tries to clinch but Connor moves out of range.
Connor closes this distance looking for a takedown but Froch circles away.
Horrible takedown by Connor or perhaps it was just good defense by Froch which made him look bad.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Froch misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Connor fails to land the takedown.
Connor closes the distance and clinches up with Froch, looking for a takedown. Connor pushes Froch against the cage but Froch circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Froch thows a body shot but no joy.
Connor looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Froch is fending him off so far but Connor persists. Nope, Froch circles away and we're back to standing.
Froch connects with the punch.

Connor manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Froch on his heels. He'll look to pass Froch's guard now, I'm sure.
Connor might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Froch is trying to keep Connor in close.
Froch manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Connor manages to get himself to full guard.
Froch slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Froch's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

Connor looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Froch wanted to stand there but Connor had control of the position.

Connor looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Froch has picked Connor up and slammed him! Connor can't keep hold of the triangle and Froch manages to pass to side control!
Connor is looking to reverse the position.

Froch thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Froch tries to get to his feet but Connor is in the middle of advancing position himself and ends up with Froch in his guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Marlo Froch showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!


Connor is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Connor avoids a punch combination nicely.
Froch looks to land a left hand but Connor moved out of range nicely.

Froch lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.

Froch breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Connor tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Froch swivels and escapes.
Froch scores with a decent looking hook.
Connor shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Froch defends it nicely.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Froch stuns Connor with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.

Nice takedown defense from Froch. No joy for Connor on that attempt.
Connor tries to clinch there but Froch circles away.
Connor shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.
Froch bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Connor's head.

Froch wriggles free and stands up.
Froch connects with a crisp jab.
Connor tries to close the distance and clinch up but Froch swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Connor shoots in and drives through. Froch sprawls well.
Marlo Froch seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Connor is looking to clinch but Froch is avoiding it.
Connor tries for a takedown but Froch sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Froch is using his reach advantage to land shots from outside his opponent's range.

and Froch makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.

Connor throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Froch's waist but Froch gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Connor off to one side.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Nice straight punches there by Froch. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Froch.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Connor is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and Froch reverses the position - he's now on top in Connor's guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Marlo Froch comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Froch has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
