PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Damian Nitschke (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jake Shields (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Jake Shields was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 21 - 14 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, Damian Nitschke!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 18 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jake Shields!
The judges for this bout are Skip Squint, Steve Erwin and Eliza Hachem.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nitschke swings for the body but Shields moves out of range.

Shields drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Shields stopping the sweep attempt from Nitschke.
Shields wants to pass the guard but Nitschke is keeping the position.
Nitschke wants to sweep here but Shields controlling him for the moment.

Shields drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Nitschke manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Shields has Nitschke in his guard.
Nitschke wants to control from the top but Shields keeps moving.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Nitschke is looking to work some ground and pound but Shields has wrist control.

Shields is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Nitschke is controlling him.

Shields avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

Shields escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Nitschke gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Nitschke thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Nitschke sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Shields's guard.
Nitschke prevents Shields from improving his position.

Shields looking for submissions from an awkward position here.
Nitschke looks to score some points with some ground and pound.

Nitschke is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Shields doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Nitschke.

Nitschke looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Shields is looking to control Nitschke's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Shields avoid being mounted?

Shields has hold of Nitschke's hands but Nitschke slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Shields wants to control but Nitschke is keeping busy.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Nitschke lands a nice short elbow.
Nitschke throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Nitschke looks to land a strike but Shields avoids it nicely and regains full guard.
Shields working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Nitschke.
Nitschke with a flurry of punches that miss.
Shields will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.
Shields has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Nitschke has passed into side control.
Shields on the wrong end of some ground and pound.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Shields is looking to reverse the position.

Nitschke connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Shields some visible discomfort.
Nitschke creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Shields sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Nitschke wants to lay and pray for a moment but Shields keeps working.
Shields pushes Nitschke away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Nitschke gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.

Nitschke advances to mount.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

It looks like Jake Shields has been cut.
Shields can't escape the position.
Nitschke scoring with some good ground and pound from mount here. Will he manage to finish Shields?
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Damian Nitschke dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Jake Shields's cut.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Nitschke throws an overhand right that lands on Shields's shoulder, as Shields tries to avoid the shot.
Nitschke thuds his right hand into Shields's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
Nitschke throws a hook to the side of Shields's head but Shields sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Nitschke misses with an uppercut. Shields saw that one coming.
Damian Nitschke seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Nitschke smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.
Shields avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Nice body punch from Nitschke.

Nitschke gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Nitschke lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Shields!

Shields bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!
Nitschke bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Shields's guard.

Shields looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Shields has his feet on Nitschke's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.
Nitschke loads up on a big right hand but Shields slips the punch.

Nitschke throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Shields on the side of the head.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Shields tries for a takedown but Nitschke circles away easily

and Nitschke counters with a takedown into side control.
Shields is not in a great position here, taking some shots.
Shields can't do much from the bottom here.
Nitschke moves into full mount!

That has opened up Jake Shields's cut even more.

The referee calls the doctor in to look at Jake Shields's cut. Oh no, the doctor has called an end to the bout!
