PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Nick Folignus (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Vartan Mamikonyan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Folignus comes into the arena with Laces Out blaring out of the sound system. Mamikonyan has chosen True Armenian Hero as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. The crowd giving both fighters a great reception on their way into the arena. That's good to see.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 6 - 0, fighting out of New York, Vartan Mamikonyan!
The judges for this bout are Lou da Vinci, John Kavanagh and Russell Pearce.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
The fight stays on the outside here - Mamikonyan looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Mamikonyan misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Mamikonyan connects with a looping right hand.
Folignus stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Mamikonyan.

Mamikonyan has closed the distance and engaged Folignus in a clinch.
Folignus on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
Folignus working hard to break the clinch.
Mamikonyan connects with a knee to the head.

Folignus breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Mamikonyan clinches.
Folignus trying to land knees to the body.

Folignus breaks from the clinch.
Mamikonyan is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Mamikonyan tries to bum rush Folignus with a series of wild strikes but Folignus uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Mamikonyan throws a body punch but Folignus moves out of range.

A head kick misses from Mamikonyan.
Mamikonyan tries to clinch
and Folignus connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.


It looks like Vartan Mamikonyan has been cut.
Mamikonyan tries to close the distance and clinch but Folignus swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Mamikonyan wants to clinch.
Folignus definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.
Good leg kick by Folignus there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.
Mamikonyan has done a lot of speed work in the buildup to this fight.

Mamikonyan fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Folignus, pushing him back against the cage.
Come on Mamikonyan - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.

Folignus's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Folignus connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt.
Mamikonyan defending well as Folignus loads up on a big left hand.

Mamikonyan rushes Folignus and presses him up against the cage.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Folignus content to slow the pace in the clinch.
A nice glancing elbow lands by Mamikonyan.
Folignus has Mamikonyan pressed against the cage.
Mamikonyan is looking to take this one to the mat.
The fighters are pressed against the cage, as the pace of the fight slows.

Folignus manages to break the clinch.
Mamikonyan goes for a double leg but Folignus avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Folignus continues to drive forward.
Mamikonyan throws an elbow that misses.

Mamikonyan lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Folignus regains full guard. Nicely done.
Mamikonyan trying to control the position from guard on top but Folignus is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Mamikonyan stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Folignus swivels though and keeps the full guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Folignus is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Mamikonyan forces his way into half guard.
Mamikonyan tries to pass the half guard into mount. Folignus knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Mamikonyan winds up and cracks Folignus with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Folignus trying to hold on to Mamikonyan's head to control him but Mamikonyan postures up.
Folignus is staying active underneath Mamikonyan, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Folignus has his hands clasped together around Mamikonyan's back. He's all about the action.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Mamikonyan is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Folignus is just riding it out for now. Mamikonyan eventually gives up the hold.

Mamikonyan is trying for a kimura here. Folignus looks like he's in a lot of pain... and he's tapping out! Mamikonyan wins by kimura!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:39 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Vartan Mamikonyan!
