PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Andrey Konovalov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jason Spezza (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Konovalov kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is CJClip - No reason to live but we do it. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Andrey Konovalov!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jason Spezza!
The judges for this bout are Elvis Blanc, William Peck and Steve Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Konovalov connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son.
Spezza thows a left - swing and a miss!
Spezza works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.
Konovalov shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Spezza as he avoids it easily.

Konovalov tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Spezza was well out of range. Poor timing from Konovalov.
We've been hearing reports that Konovalov has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.

Konovalov has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Spezza can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Konovalov drops back, looking for a kneebar! Spezza looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Spezza looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Spezza!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

That's time! Konovalov's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Spezza lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Konovalov goes for a double leg but Spezza avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Spezza continues to drive forward.
Spezza works for underhooks and lands a body shot in the process.
Spezza tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.

Konovalov is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Spezza pulls him back up using the underhooks.

Konovalov turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Konovalov manages to end up in side control.

Konovalov is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Spezza is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

A kick lands to the mid section there for Spezza.
Spezza sizes up Konovalov with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle.
Spezza rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Konovalov moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

I would just about give that final round to Jason Spezza.

Jason Spezza decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
