PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Buddie Rivera (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Richard Carneiro (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rivera comes to the cage accompanied by My Chemical Romance - I'm Not Okay (I Promise). Carneiro has chosen Anthem for the Young 'n Restless as his entrance music. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Buddie Rivera!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Richard Carneiro!
The judges for this bout are Paulo Santos, Edson Gomes and Alexandre Firmino.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Carneiro swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Carneiro takes a head kick and keeps coming.
Rivera throws a leg kick but Carneiro sees it coming and checks it nicely.
Carneiro slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.
We've been told by Rivera's head coaches at Academy 209 that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Rivera misses with a low kick as Carneiro jumps back.
Rivera swings away with a leg kick that misses.
Ouch! a nice leg kick from Rivera, right into the meat.
Rivera moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.
Rivera lands a nice leg kick that just misses Carneiro's sensitive parts.
Rivera connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.
Buddie Rivera seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Rivera feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Carneiro's calf.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Carneiro takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.

Rivera tries to work over Carneiro's front leg with a kick but Carneiro checks it.
Carneiro throws a wild combination but nothing lands.

Rivera shoots in for a takedown but Carneiro shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Rivera takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.

Carneiro throws a wild combination but nothing lands.

Rivera dives in and scores a takedown into Carneiro's guard.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Rivera postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Carneiro really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Rivera. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Rivera sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Carneiro's guard.
Rivera seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Carneiro does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Rivera is taking a breather. Carneiro says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Carneiro tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.

Rivera seems to be looking for submissions.
Rivera is looking to take a break and control but Carneiro is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Rivera is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

Rivera not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Rivera not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Rivera is trying to control. Carneiro wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Rivera has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Carneiro is looking for a sweep. Rivera is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Carneiro wants to get back to his feet.

Rivera is trying to work for a kimura but Carneiro is defending well.

Carneiro kicks off Rivera and gets to his feet.

A slapping leg kick lands for Rivera.
Rivera lands a head kick. Carneiro smiles back at him and beckons him forward.
Rivera lands with a thumping leg kick.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Rivera looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Rivera uses his free foot to push down on Carneiro's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Carneiro.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Buddie Rivera dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Rivera plants his feet and lands a nice head kick!
Rivera thumps Carneiro with a low kick.
Carneiro blocks the body kick.
Carneiro throws a right hand that Rivera ducks under and follows up with a left that Rivera also avoids with ease.
A head kick from Rivera lands but Carneiro takes it in his stride.
Rivera fails to land the takedown.
A chopping leg kick lands by Rivera.
Carneiro slaps away a takedown attempt from Rivera, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Carneiro stuffs the takedown.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Buddie Rivera. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Rivera lands a nice leg kick that just misses Carneiro's sensitive parts.

Some bone on bone action there as Carneiro checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.
Rivera lands with a thumping leg kick.
Rivera tries a low kick but Carneiro avoids it.
Carneiro throws a right hand that Rivera ducks under and follows up with a left that Rivera also avoids with ease.

and Rivera counters with a shoot takedown. Carneiro fights it but they end up in guard.
Carneiro utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Rivera is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Carneiro is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Carneiro is trying to hold Rivera in close to prevent damage but Rivera has managed to pass into half guard.

Rivera wants to take a breather but Carneiro is having none of it.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Rivera is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Rivera is working for a submission of some sort.

Carneiro is trying to control Rivera's posture but Rivera avoids it.
Carneiro wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!

Rivera working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Rivera in side control, throwing shots but Carneiro defends.

Rivera wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Carneiro, who protects the arm well.

The ground and pound from Rivera seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.

Rivera tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Rivera has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Rivera buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Rivera is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Carneiro can do to turn this around?
Rivera throws a low kick but Carneiro avoids it.
Rivera throws a half hearted mid kick.
Carneiro throws a right and a left that both miss.
Rivera fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Carneiro is out of range.
Rivera throws a leg kick but Carneiro sees it coming and moves out of range.
Carneiro's leg has a nasty welt from taking a succession of leg kicks. That must be slowing him down.
Carneiro throws a series of punches but Rivera avoids them all with ease.
Rivera looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Carneiro throws a right and a left that both miss.
A combination from Carneiro does no damage.
Rivera dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Carneiro. That did some damage!

Carneiro on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Rivera. Rivera obviously looking to wear him down.
Carneiro tries a head kick but it misses.
Rivera connects with a leg kick. Carneiro looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it.
Buddie Rivera is winning the standup battle so far.
Rivera lands a leg kick that knocks Carneiro off balance momentarily.
Rivera throws a leg kick but Carneiro sees it coming and moves out of range.
Richard Carneiro is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Rivera.

Rivera drives through with a takedown into Carneiro's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

Buddie Rivera overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Carneiro takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Carneiro wants to improve his position but Rivera is controlling well.

Rivera is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Carneiro is just riding it out for now. Rivera eventually gives up the hold.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Rivera content to control rather than advance.
Rivera wants to control but Carneiro is keeping him busy.
Rivera stops Carneiro from getting back to his feet.
Rivera is keen to just control but Carneiro is a slippery customer.

Carneiro pushes Rivera off, looking to escape but Rivera dives into side control. He's locked up a kimura now - that was fast! He's cranking on it and Carneiro is forced to tap! The fight is over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:20 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Buddie Rivera!
In his post fight interview, Buddie Rivera started talking himself up. Luckily his charisma kept the crowd on side and gave him a good reception.
