PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Mic Hael (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ban-Ki Kim (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Hael comes into the arena with WISE MAN AND HIS WORDS by Wiley blaring out of the sound system. Kim has chosen Guns N' Roses: Welcome To The Jungle as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. This should be a great matchup!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 7 - 1, fighting out of Los Angeles, Mic Hael!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 21 - 9 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Ban-Ki Kim!
The judges for this bout are Ryoma Takatsuka, Colin Fray and Paul Gruel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hael throws a leg kick but Kim moved away.
A big left from Hael misses.
Hael changes levels and scores with a jab to the body.
Hael has a nice red mark on his side after a thudding body kick by Kim.
Kim swings for the body but Hael moves out of range.
Hael throws a leg kick
and Kim counters with a flying knee. Nice.

Kim tries to sprawl but Hael drives through with a takedown into half guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Kim holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now.
Hael tries to pass the half guard into mount. Kim knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

We've been hearing good reports from Hael's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

Hael looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Kim desperately trying to maintain half guard.
Hael seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Kim does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Kim is looking for a sweep. Hael is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Kim felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

Hael is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Kim doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Hael.
Hael is trying to control the action in half guard but Kim is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Kim tries to roll over but Hael keeps him under control.

Hael seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Kim does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Kim trying to hold on to Hael's head to control him but Hael postures up.
Kim gets back to full guard.
Hael trying to control but Kim is working from the bottom.
Kim wants to stand up but Hael is controlling him.

Hael trying to control the position from guard on top but Kim is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Hael stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Kim swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Hael throws a big right hand that misses.
Hael slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Hael trying to control the position but Kim is working away.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
The strikes coming from Hael are missing the target in this wave of attacks.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mic Hael dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Kim showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Hael.
Hael moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.


It looks like Ban-Ki Kim has been cut.
Kim pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Hael misses with an uppercut.
Kim throws a head kick but Hael moves out of range.
Hael blocks a leg kick.
Hael takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Ban-Ki Kim seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Hael shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Hael goes for a high kick. It partially lands.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Kim lands a nice looking kick to the body. Hael takes a step back to recover.
Kim throws a low kick but Hael moves out of range easily.
Hael punishes Kim's body with a nice straight punch.

Hael looking to score a takedown here. Kim is defending well but Hael drives through and ends up in Kim's guard.

Hael is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Kim is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Kim has escaped and now he's on top!

Hael is working an open guard so Kim takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Hael takes a push kick to the midsection and stumbles backwards.
Kim looks for the body kick but Hael saw that one coming.
Hael keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.
Mic Hael is winning the standup battle so far.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Hael has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Kim.
Hael swats away the attempt to clinch by Kim.
Kim scores with a head kick.


It looks like Mic Hael has been cut.
The fight stays on the outside here - Kim looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Hael looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Kim tries to roll over but Hael keeps him under control.
Kim is trying to stand back up but Hael is controlling him

Hael is looking for a kimura here.
Kim tries to get to full guard but Hael has control of the leg.
Hael takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Hael seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Kim does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Kim wants to get back to his feet.

Hael wants to pass the guard but Kim is defending well.

Hael is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Kim sees it coming and defends easily.
Kim is refusing to be controlled, as Hael sits in half guard.

Mic Hael dominated that second round.
Both fighters have cut men working on them during the interval.

Hael throws a head kick but Kim moves out of range.

Hael blocks the body kick.
Hael looking to land some kicks to the body here.
Kim moves out of range as Hael strikes.
Kim stuffs the takedown attempt from Hael. Hael gets slowly back to his feet.
Kim misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Kim tries to work over Hael's front leg with a kick but Hael checks it.

Hael moves into range and clinches up with Kim.

A knee to the head by Kim.
A nice glancing elbow lands by Kim.
Hael goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
Kim is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.
Hael tries to throw a body punch but Kim avoids it by throwing Hael back against the cage.
Kim tries a body shot but Hael blocks it.
Hael lands a body punch.
Kim tries to stall but Hael uses the opportunity to gain a better position.
Hael blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.

Hael breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Kim has Hael up against the cage in a clinch.

Hael pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Kim fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Hael moves out of range of the body kick.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Good leg kick by Kim there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.
An inside leg kick lands from Kim.
Kim uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Hael.
Ooooh, nice body kick lands from Kim. Hael shrugs it off though.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Kim.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Hael throws a head kick but Kim moves out of range.
Kim scores with a push kick.
Kim cracks the inside of Hael's front leg.
Kim wants to clinch.
Kim on the wrong end of a kick to the body.
Ban-Ki Kim has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Kim lands a nice looking kick to the body. Hael takes a step back to recover.
Kim uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Hael.
Kim with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
Kim misses with a kick to the body.
Kim ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Hael moves away.
Mic Hael is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Hael misses with a straight left.
Kim looks to throw a body kick
enabling Hael to counter with a crisp jab.
Hael misses with a takedown attempt - Kim sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
A chopping leg kick lands by Kim.
Kim doesn't manage to clinch there - Hael circles away.

Hael fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Hael misses with a low kick.
Hael keeps Kim at a distance using the push kick.
Kim turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
Hael is hobbling a little on that front leg after taking quite a few leg kicks so far in this fight.
Kim throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Kim tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Hael manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
A low kick from Kim is predictable there
and Hael makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Kim scores with a shot to the body.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Kim throws a leg kick which misses Hael's front leg but catches the back leg as Hael tries to avoid it.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Kim.
Kim lands a leg kick that knocks Hael off balance momentarily.

And that's the end of the fight!
Ban-Ki Kim comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Hael has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Mic Hael decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
