PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Daniel Taker (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Chris Mayo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Mayo's choice of entrance music: Super Furry Animals - Golden Retriever. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Daniel Taker!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 29 - 23 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Chris Mayo!
The judges for this bout are Paul Gruel, Jeff Smith and Colin Fray.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mayo tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Taker paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Taker drives through and clinches with Mayo against the cage.
Taker has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Mayo after a bit of a struggle.
Taker misses with some punches.
Mayo works for underhooks and lands a body shot in the process.

Taker lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.

Taker is working for a kimura from half guard. He's really concentrating on the hold and it's allowed Mayo to slip a leg under and get back to full guard.
We've been hearing good reports from Taker's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

Mayo bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Taker's head.

Mayo is pressed up against the cage. Taker has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Mayo down to the mat. Mayo avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.

Mayo has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Taker is landing a low percentage of strikes.

Taker goes for a takedown in the clinch but Mayo prevents it.

Taker is trying to drag Mayo to the mat but Mayo just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Taker holds on and takes a little breather.

Taker takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.

Taker missing with a left hand there. Mayo was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Taker shoots in but Mayo avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Taker fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Mayo, pushing him back against the cage.

Taker changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Mayo fights it off and pushes away nicely.

Taker has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Mayo is working away from the top position though.
Mayo seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Taker does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Mayo wants to pass to mount but Taker is defending the position.
Taker is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Mayo's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Mayo's back!

Mayo has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Mayo sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.

Chris Mayo showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Mayo throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Taker doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Mayo cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

Mayo lands a knee to the head there! That was nasty!
Taker misses with a punch on the inside.
Mayo scores with a knee to the head.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Mayo lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Taker backwards.


Taker is rocked!
Mayo lands a big knee! That's hurt Taker! Oh, he's all over the place! Mayo lands another knee that sends Taker to the floor and the referee steps in to end the fight!
