The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sloppy strikes from Beneventi. Those never looked like landing.

Beneventi changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Velasquez looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Beneventi tries to advance to mount but can't.

Beneventi thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Velasquez is looking to regain half guard here but Beneventi keeps moving and retains side control.

You can see the frustration on Velasquez's face as Beneventi controls the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Velasquez tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Beneventi wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Beneventi creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Velasquez sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.

Beneventi knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Velasquez on the ground.

Beneventi is looking to take a break and control but Velasquez is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
The ground and pound from Beneventi seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.

We've been hearing good reports from Beneventi's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.
