PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Alex Cross (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Shorty McTwat (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Shorty McTwat will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Alex Cross!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Shorty McTwat!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Cecil Peabody and Alan Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Cross clinches.

Cross jumps guard and drags McTwat to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
McTwat scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
McTwat throwing strikes from guard but Cross blocks nicely.
Cross controlling McTwat's posture.
McTwat throws a big right hand that misses.

Cross is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Cross holds on and takes a little breather.
McTwat throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
McTwat wants to stand and escape but instead Cross has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.
McTwat looks winded!
This has been an exciting period of action!
Cross slips nicely into half guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Cross in particular looking to stall.
McTwat throws a sloppy strike from the bottom. He's now off balance and Cross manages to pass to side control.

Cross is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. McTwat knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Cross content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.

Cross stands up.

McTwat tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and Cross counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Cross is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. McTwat can't fight it off and eventually Cross manages to take the fight to the floor. McTwat looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Cross sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed McTwat's guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Cross decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.

Cross shoots in and gets a takedown into McTwat's guard.
Cross is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Cross cracks McTwat with a solid left hand.
Cross controlling from the top position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Cross pushes down on McTwat's leg and manages to get into half guard.

Cross decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.
McTwat throws a lazy uppercut

and Cross counters by moving into the clinch.

Cross gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Cross passes to full mount!
Cross controlling the position easily from mount.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Cross cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!

Cross lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Cross controlling his opponent.
Cross lands a heavy elbow.
Cross pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Cross unloading with bombs!
Cross fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
Cross tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Alex Cross dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Cross lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.

Cross manages to get an easy takedown there - catching McTwat on his heels. He'll look to pass McTwat's guard now, I'm sure.
Cross connects with a couple of short punches.
Cross content to stall in guard here.

Cross thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Cross is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that McTwat can do to turn this around?

McTwat is breathing heavily.

Cross gets to his feet. McTwat looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Cross scores with a takedown into McTwat's guard.
Cross controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Cross has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Cross seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down McTwat for as long as he can get away with.

Alex Cross has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Cross scores with a nice head shot.
McTwat misses with a looping right.

Cross has closed the distance and engaged McTwat in a clinch.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Cross's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.

Cross has McTwat pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Cross pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending McTwat tumbling to the mat - Cross dives into McTwat's guard.
Cross is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
McTwat will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.

Cross is stalling in the full guard.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Alex Cross.
McTwat tries to clinch but fails miserably

and Cross counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
McTwat is looking to sweep but instead, Cross has passed into half guard.

Cross decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.

Cross shoots in and bounces McTwat off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
McTwat wants to stand but Cross is controlling the position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Cross lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Cross is standing up over McTwat. McTwat looks to escape but Cross dives into side control.
McTwat tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Cross in side control, just content to control the action for now.
McTwat is looking to reverse the position.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Alex Cross dominated that second round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. And we move into the final round!



Cross closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. McTwat did well to prevent Cross getting side control.
Cross is figuring out what he wants to do next.
McTwat is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Cross scores with a couple of nice shots.
McTwat tries to kick Cross off in order to stand up. Cross Avoids the leg push though and dives into side control.
A lull in the action here.
McTwat takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Cross is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, McTwat has escaped the position, nice work there.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Cross decides to stand up, so the ref orders McTwat to his feet.

Cross closes the distance and clinches.

Cross is trying to trip McTwat. He has hold of a leg but McTwat is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Cross persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Cross postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.

McTwat controls Cross momentarily but Cross frees himself.
Cross has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Cross advances to half guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Cross winds up and cracks McTwat with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Cross prevents McTwat from standing back up.
McTwat strikes from the bottom but Cross uses the opportunity to move to side control.
McTwat takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.
McTwat is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Cross is controlling him well.
You can see the frustration on McTwat's face as Cross controls the position.
McTwat is trying to work for a sweep but Cross has mounted him!

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Cross controlling his opponent.
Cross's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Alex Cross wasn't doing enough on the ground.

Cross closes the distance and pushes McTwat back into the cage.
Cross slowing the pace effectively.

Cross escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Shorty McTwat seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Cross changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. McTwat looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Shorty McTwat has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Cross creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots.
McTwat is trying to strike from the bottom but Cross has passed into full mount.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Cross controlling the pace for now.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
McTwat flailing away with punches but nothing is landing.

And that's the end of the fight!
Alex Cross showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Cross has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
