And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Justin Craven!
The judges for this bout are Vladimir Khabensky, Konstantin Menshow and Dmitry Maklakov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Maia darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Craven trying to hold on to Maia's head to control him but Maia postures up.
Craven is trying to avoid being dragged into an even worse position than he's already in but Maia is staying active.
Craven pushes Maia off looking to stand but Maia dives back in and keeps control.
Craven is looking for a sweep. Maia is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Maia is nestled in close to Craven, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Maia keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
Maia works his way into side control.
Maia is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Craven will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
Maia grinds an elbow into Craven's temple.
Maia has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Maia cracks Craven with an elbow. That is naaassty.
Maia wants to lay and pray for a moment but Craven keeps working.
Maia is putting a hurting on Craven here, landing some big shots from side control.
Craven is trying to get back to half guard.
Maia tries to advance to mount but Craven denies him.
Maia advances nicely into full mount.
Craven tries to hold on but Maia postures up.
Craven bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!
Craven pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Maia is keeping the position for now.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Craven trying to control but Maia is working from the bottom.

Maia is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Maia is working hard here to advance position.
Craven trying to control the position from guard on top but Maia is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Maia seems keen to control Craven's posture.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Justin Craven was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Craven misses the shot to the body.
We've been told by Maia's head coaches at Araba Fenice that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Maia lands a glancing blow to the side of Craven's head.
Craven has a takedown stuffed.
Craven throws a poor cross that misses
and Maia counters with a left and a right that stings Craven.
Maia moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Craven misses with a series of wild punches.
Craven closes the distance but Maia moves to the side
and Maia counters with a slapping leg kick.
Craven looks winded!

Maia drops Craven with a beautiful combination! Craven stares up at his opponent, who ushers him back to his feet - Maia is looking for the KO!


Craven is rocked!


It looks like Justin Craven has been cut.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Maia throws a head kick but Craven moves out of range.

Maia lands a big uppercut and Craven crumbles to the floor! The ref thinks about stopping the fight but Craven looks OK. Maia waves Craven back to his feet!
Craven is still on wobbly legs! Can Maia finish him?
Maia lands a big head kick that sends Craven to the canvas! Maia follows up with strikes from the mount that forces the ref to step in and stop the fight!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:30 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Demian Maia!
