PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Robledo Puch (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Bill Hicks (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Robledo Puch!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Bill Hicks!
The judges for this bout are Aleksandr Martynov, Vladimir Khabensky and Dmitry Maklakov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Puch closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Hicks's guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Hicks working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Puch.
Puch throws a big right hand that misses.
Puch looking to pass the guard.

Hicks has been taking part in the yoga sessions down at Warrior MMA and Fitness. Presumably he's going to look for a slick submission... Or maybe he's looking to avoid one.

Puch misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Robledo Puch wasn't doing enough on the ground.

Puch shoots in and bounces Hicks off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

Puch seems to be working for a kimura but Hicks defends the submission attempt.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Puch is trying hard to land a takedown here. Hicks sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Puch is defended easily by Hicks.
Hicks shoots in for a takedown but Puch shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Horrible takedown by Puch or perhaps it was just good defense by Hicks which made him look bad.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Robledo Puch. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Hicks changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Puch looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.

Hicks passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Puch!

Puch is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Puch sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
Hicks throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Puch has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Hicks is working away from the top position though.
Puch is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Bill Hicks has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Hicks seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Puch gets full guard.
Puch throwing strikes off his back to little effect.
Puch bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Hicks's guard.

Puch working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
We've been hearing good reports from Puch's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

The ground and pound from Puch seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
Puch lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.

Puch in side control lands a nice looking series of punches and elbows.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Puch is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Hicks is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Well Puch has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Robledo Puch decided to hype himself up post fight. It was going well but he went on about it a bit too long and the crowd turned on him a little.
