PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Steve Cox (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gabriel Douglas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cox comes to the cage accompanied by Seventeen - Sex Pistols. There are an array of beautiful celebrities at ringside tonight! I wonder if any of them paid for their tickets.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Steve Cox!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Gabriel Douglas!
The judges for this bout are Chris Downing, Alan Glass and Cecil Peabody.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cox tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Douglas defends well and Cox ends up having to push Douglas into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Cox has Douglas pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Douglas manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
Cox is clearly stalling here... Pick up the pace son.

Cox breaks from the clinch.
Cox throws a sloppy head kick and Douglas moves out of range easily.
Cox throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Cox shoots in looking for a takedown. Douglas tries to sprawl out of it but Cox keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Douglas manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Steve Cox. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Cox tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Douglas was well out of range. Poor timing from Cox.

Cox throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Douglas was covering up waiting for the punch and Cox finishes the takedown easily into guard.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

Douglas wants to stand but Cox is controlling the position.
Cox wants to control from the top but Douglas keeps moving.

Douglas seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Cox is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Douglas can do anything to dispel that myth.
Douglas wants to sweep here but Cox controlling him for the moment.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Cox takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.

and Douglas cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

Cox looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.

and Douglas counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Cox takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.

Cox throws a shot from downtown. Douglas moves away and avoids it.
Cox avoids the body shot from Douglas.
Douglas throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Douglas misses with the combination.
Douglas waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Cox.
Cox moves away from the strike by Douglas.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Cox shoots in but Douglas avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Cox drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Steve Cox will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Cox loads up on a big right hand but Douglas slips the punch.
Cox tries to work over Douglas's front leg with a kick but Douglas checks it.

We've been informed that Douglas has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.
Cox fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Douglas avoids it really well and circles away.

Douglas will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Gabriel Douglas is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Cox looks to land a left hand but Douglas moved out of range nicely.
Cox shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down.
Douglas lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head.

and Douglas counters with a crisp one two that drops Cox! Douglas thinks about following him to the mat for a moment but instead steps back and waves Cox to his feet! Cox is in big trouble!


Cox is rocked!
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Douglas attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin.
Oh Cox is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Douglas digs a good body shot into Cox's ribs.
Cox seems to have got his legs back now.
Cox slips a straight right by Douglas.
Cox throws an off balance right hand

and Douglas counters with a single leg into guard. Cox didn't expect that.
Cox bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Douglas's guard.

Cox trying to control the position from guard on top but Douglas is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Cox is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Douglas is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Cox wants to pass the guard but Douglas is keeping the position.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Steve Cox wasn't doing enough on the ground.

and Douglas counters with a nice uppercut.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Gabriel Douglas showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!

Cox working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Douglas doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Douglas manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Douglas wants to stand but Cox is controlling his posture from full guard.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Douglas wants to pass the guard but Cox is keeping the position.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Douglas avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Cox is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Douglas defends well.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Steve Cox.
I think Cox has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
