PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Kenta Kobashi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Peter Taphorn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kobashi comes into the arena with DJ Krush - Kemuri blaring out of the sound system. Kenta Kobashi has a significant reach advantage - let's see if he can make it count.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 17 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Kenta Kobashi!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 13 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Peter Taphorn!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Bishop, James Atkins and Steven Brown.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Taphorn tests Kobashi's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Taphorn misses with a body shot
and Kobashi counters with a slapping leg kick.
Taphorn ducks down and throws a hook to the body.
We've been informed that Taphorn has been sparring a lot of Muay Thai in the buildup to this fight so let's see if that has an impact on the result.
Kobashi tries to clinch but Taphorn is having none of it.
Kobashi drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.
Taphorn throws a shot to the body.

Kobashi moves into the clinch successfully.
Taphorn tries to work over Kobashi's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.

Kobashi lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Taphorn backwards.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Kobashi.
Kobashi tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.

With the fighters up against the cage, Taphorn throws an elbow but misses.
Kobashi misses with a punch on the inside.

Kobashi tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.

Taphorn manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

Taphorn throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Kobashi escapes and throws Taphorn's legs to the side, diving into side control!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Taphorn tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Kobashi wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Kobashi will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Taphorn wants to get back to full guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Kobashi seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Taphorn does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.

Kobashi wants to free his trapped foot but Taphorn is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Kobashi wants to advance to full mount but Taphorn doesn't think that's going to happen and regains full guard instead.

Kobashi is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Taphorn is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Kobashi is looking to take a break and control but Taphorn is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

That was a close round but I would say that Kenta Kobashi will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Taphorn might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Kobashi haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

Peter Taphorn showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

No luck for Taphorn with that takedown attempt.
Kobashi uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Taphorn.
Kobashi tries to clinch up but Taphorn circles away and keeps his distance.

Taphorn tried to score with a low kick but Kobashi checks it.
Taphorn catches Kobashi with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong!
Taphorn lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.

so Taphorn counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

Taphorn postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Kobashi has control of Taphorn's left arm, preventing Taphorn from doing any damage.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Kobashi tries to close the distance and clinch but Taphorn swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Kobashi is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.
Taphorn can't find room to land a body shot as Kobashi controls the action.

Kobashi wants to control from the top but Taphorn keeps moving.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
