PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Jake Nelson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Paul Williams (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Williams has chosen All the Above- Maino ft. T-Pain as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 30 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jake Nelson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 38 - 22 - 3, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Paul Williams!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Cesar, Alexandre Firmino and Luis Engracia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Williams takes a body punch but keeps moving.
Nelson shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Williams as he jumps to the side.
Nelson feints and then cracks Williams's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Williams down.
Williams is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Williams lands a glancing blow to the side of Nelson's head.
We've been told by Nelson's head coaches at Franklin D. Bluth Memorial Supergym that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Nelson ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.
Nelson shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Williams sprawls well. Williams wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Nelson gets slowly back to his feet.
Williams swings for the body but Nelson moves out of range.
Williams lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.
Williams has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout.

Nelson shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Williams is trying to defend but Nelson finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Nelson throws a big elbow that misses, also allowing Williams to regain full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Nelson is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Jake Nelson just wasn't active enough.

A looping hook to the body misses from Williams. Nelson does a little dance to reset his feet.

Nelson stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Williams swivels though and keeps the full guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Williams, as that shot connected.

Williams throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.

and Williams counters with a solid body kick.

Nelson scores with a sloppy right hand. Williams should have avoided that one.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Williams enables Nelson to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Williams manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Williams walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Nelson checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.

Williams on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.

Paul Williams is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Williams throws a sloppy head kick and Nelson moves out of range easily.
Williams closes the distance and lands a one-two.
Williams throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Nelson is defended easily by Williams.
Williams bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.

Nelson looks like he's developed a pretty tasty lump over his left eye. He'll need to avoid taking much more damage to that.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Nelson throws a lazy right hand but Williams sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.

Nelson uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Williams.
Nelson shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Williams pinned against the cage. Williams gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

A close second round but Paul Williams will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Williams throws a right hand that Nelson ducks under and follows up with a left that Nelson also avoids with ease.

Nelson shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Williams's guard.
Nelson throws a strike but Williams rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Williams must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Williams has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Nelson is proving hard to escape from.
Williams wants to pass the guard but Nelson is keeping the position.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Paul Williams hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Williams lands a powerful looking uppercut that connected with his opponent's jaw.
Williams swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Nelson with a body punch. A glancing blow.
Nelson takes a kick to the side of the head.
Nelson is looking to wear down Williams with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.
Nelson throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
Nelson throws a hook but Williams blocks it.
Nelson moves out of range of the body kick from Williams.

Nelson closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Williams did well to prevent Nelson getting side control.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Nelson has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
