Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of
1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Brenton Sharp!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Eric Thomson!
The judges for this bout are Roger Salmon, Micheangelo Fripello and Ryoma Takatsuka.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sharp fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Thomson avoids it really well and circles away.
A head kick misses from Sharp.
Thomson looks to throw the jab but Sharp is out of range.
Thomson shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Sharp has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Thomson is working away from the top position though.
Thomson wants to take a breather but Sharp is having none of it.
That's one minute gone in the round.
Thomson is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and Sharp reverses the position - he's now on top in Thomson's guard.
Sharp controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Sharp wants to get up but he can't break Thomson's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Sharp postures up.
Sharp stops Thomson from standing up.
Sharp's corner is telling him to maintain position.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Thomson can do anything to dispel that myth.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Thomson drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round.
Thomson wants to control from the top but Sharp keeps moving.
Thomson looking to sit in guard and control but Sharp gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Sharp content to stall in guard here.
That's three minutes gone in the round.
Sharp won't allow Thomson to get back to his feet.
Sharp would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Thomson wants to stand up but Sharp is controlling him.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Thomson connects with a combination that backs up Sharp into the cage. Thomson lands a flurry of punches that gets past Sharp's guard. Sharp is down and the referee has seen enough. It is all over! Thomson bursts into tears - this win obviously means a huge amount to him.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:51 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Eric Thomson!
