PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Pentti Hirvonen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Viktor Kafka (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kafka has chosen Welcome to the Jungle as his entrance music. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 35 - 18 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Pentti Hirvonen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 29 - 16 - 1, fighting out of New York, Viktor Kafka!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Don Winkell and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hirvonen has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Kafka.
Ooooh, nice body kick lands from Kafka. Hirvonen shrugs it off though.
Kafka misses with a hook

and Hirvonen counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Kafka trying to control but Hirvonen postures up.
Hirvonen tries to pass the half guard into mount. Kafka knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Hirvonen works his way into side control.
Hirvonen throws a strike aimed at the side of Kafka's head but Kafka avoids it well.

Hirvonen goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Kafka has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Hirvonen but great work by Kafka.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Hirvonen manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hirvonen tries to get to full guard but Kafka has control of the leg.
Hirvonen moves into full guard.
Hirvonen is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Hirvonen is looking for a triangle but Kafka pushes his legs off easily.
Kafka sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Hirvonen's guard.
Kafka is keen to just control but Hirvonen is a slippery customer.
Hirvonen is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Kafka wants to take a breather but Hirvonen is having none of it.
Hirvonen is looking for a sweep. Kafka is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Viktor Kafka was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Kafka throws out a loose jab but Hirvonen uses good head movement to avoid it.
Kafka thows a left - swing and a miss!
Kafka tries a head kick but it misses.

Kafka throws a jab when Hirvonen was well out of range.
Hirvonen has a takedown stuffed.

Kafka throws a lazy right hand but Hirvonen sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Kafka.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Hirvonen is trying hard to land a takedown here. Kafka sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Kafka looks to land a body kick but Hirvonen moved away.

Kafka gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Hirvonen to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Hirvonen not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Kafka is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Hirvonen defends well.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Sloppy strikes from Kafka. Those never looked like landing.

Kafka manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Hirvonen on his heels. He'll look to pass Hirvonen's guard now, I'm sure.

That was a close round but I would say that Pentti Hirvonen will probably get the nod.

Hirvonen escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Kafka gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Hirvonen is fighting to break Kafka's control of his arms but Kafka is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Kafka can't keep his opponent in guard - Hirvonen advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Hirvonen has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Hirvonen is landing with some decent strikes but Kafka is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.

Hirvonen shoots for a double leg takedown but Kafka sprawls well. He's pushed Hirvonen's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Kafka takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.
Kafka tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Hirvonen wants to lay and pray for a moment but Kafka keeps working.

Hirvonen is trying to ground and pound but Kafka uses the momentary lack of control by Hirvonen to regain half guard.

Kafka is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Hirvonen is aware though and is defending well.
Hirvonen looking to sit in guard and control but Kafka gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Kafka postures up in Hirvonen's guard and throws a big left but Hirvonen blocks it.

Hirvonen has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Kafka is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Hirvonen.
Hirvonen manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!

Hirvonen seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Kafka does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Hirvonen, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
