PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Alexio Silva (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Giovani Castro (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Silva comes to the cage accompanied by A Country Boy Can Survive. Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 18 - 3 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Alexio Silva!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Giovani Castro!
The judges for this bout are Trevor Gratis, Dillan Fox and Robert Douchet.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Castro gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Silva to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Silva is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Castro keeping full guard, as Silva tries to pass.
Castro wants to stand up but Silva is controlling him.
Silva pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Castro is keeping the position for now.
Silva pushes down on Castro's leg and manages to get into half guard.

Silva is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Castro is just riding it out for now. Silva eventually gives up the hold.

Silva is looking for a kimura but Castro is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Silva to get the leverage.

Silva is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Castro has managed to free his arm - good work.
Castro is looking to escape.

Silva looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Castro is trying to stand.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Silva seems to be working for a kimura but Castro defends the submission attempt.
Silva stops Castro from getting back to his feet.

Silva is looking for a kimura. It's pretty deep but Castro still has the half guard so he's probably OK. Oh, Castro has exploded into a beautiful escape there and after a quick scramble, he's ended up in side control on top! Nice work!
Silva tries to control but Castro manages to take his back.
Silva is really stuck here.
Silva is working hard here to advance position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Silva manages to reverse the position and now he's in Castro's guard. Nice work there by Silva.

Castro has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Silva off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
Silva smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.
Silva tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Castro defends well and Silva ends up having to push Castro into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Castro breaks the clinch.
A looping hook to the body misses from Silva. Castro does a little dance to reset his feet.
Silva thows a left - swing and a miss!
Castro shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Castro throws a low kick but Silva avoids it.
Silva dives in for a single leg takedown but Castro sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Castro lands a left hand that snaps the head of Silva backwards.

Castro breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Castro turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
Castro just misses with a punch to the body.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Silva thows a body shot but no joy.
Castro wants to clinch.
A combination from Castro does no damage.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Castro tries to close the distance and clinch but Silva swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Alexio Silva dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Castro fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Silva is out of range.
Silva takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
Silva misses with a wild body shot.
Silva blocks a head kick by Castro.
Silva looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Silva misses with a takedown attempt - Castro sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Silva shoots in and drives through. Castro sprawls well.
Castro throws a hook but Silva avoids it easily.
Castro is looking to clinch but Silva is avoiding it.
Castro will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Castro misses with a wild body shot.

Nice body punch from Castro.
Castro keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Castro looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Alexio Silva. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Castro tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Silva throws a body punch but Castro moves out of range.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Silva is defended easily by Castro.
Castro throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Castro catches Silva with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong!
Good exchange - Silva coming out on top.

Castro tries to clinch but Silva moves out of range.

Silva closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Silva lands in his opponent's guard.
Castro is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Silva is controlling him.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Castro is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.
Silva stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Castro swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Castro is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Silva is controlling him.

Silva drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Silva jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Silva prevents Castro from getting back to his feet.
Silva looking to pass the guard.
Silva pushes down on Castro's leg and manages to get into half guard.

Silva seems to be looking for submissions.
Alexio Silva overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Castro wants to get back to his feet.

Silva is looking for a kimura here.

Castro is defending against the submission attempts here by Silva.
Castro is trying to stand up here but Silva is controlling him well.

That was a close second round but I would say that Alexio Silva will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Castro misses with a hook

and Silva counters with a single leg into guard. Castro didn't expect that.

Silva drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Castro manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Silva has Castro in his guard.

Castro got a little sloppy there for a moment and Silva has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Castro has managed to get both his arms back between Silva's legs - danger averted.

Silva wants to control the position but Castro says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard.
Castro wants to get back to his feet.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Silva is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Castro pulls his head out easily.

Silva looking for a kimura from the bottom but Castro passes into side control!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Silva has one of Castro's arms on lockdown, trying to prevent him from doing any damage.
Silva tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Silva sneaks back into half guard.
Silva tries to roll over but Castro keeps him under control.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Castro wants to stand but Silva has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.

Silva looking for submissions off his back.
Silva wants to get back to full guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Silva gets full guard.
Silva looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Castro puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.
Giovani Castro has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Silva manages to get to full guard.
Silva utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Castro has gone for a leg lock! Silva slips out almost immediately though and dives into Castro's guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Castro thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.

And that's the end of the fight!
Alexio Silva showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Silva, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
