Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Merrill Ford!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Nick Diaz!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, Jack Bonds and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Diaz clinches with his opponent.

Diaz has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Ford uses from the top position.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

Diaz looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Ford passes into side control.
Diaz tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Diaz gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Diaz tries to roll over but Ford keeps him under control.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Ford in particular looking to stall.
Diaz has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Ford is working away from the top position though.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Diaz is looking to improve his position.
Well, if Ford is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Merrill Ford.

Diaz dives in and scores a takedown into Ford's guard.
Diaz pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Ford is keeping the position for now.

Ford is looking for a triangle here but Diaz uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.

Diaz is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Ford knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Ford is holding Diaz down, trying to stall.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Diaz tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Diaz has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Ford struggling a bit here.

Diaz is working to tighten his grip on Ford's neck. He's isolated an arm and is working for an arm triangle. Ford has recognised the danger and is trying to turn with the submission but Diaz is really squeezing tight and eventually Ford passes out! Diaz breaks the hold and jumps onto the cage to celebrate! Submission of the night, I'd say!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:50 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). Nick Diaz!
In his post fight interview, Nick Diaz started talking himself up. Luckily his charisma kept the crowd on side and gave him a good reception.
