PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Damon Pierce (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Cray Daddy Tay (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Pierce comes to the cage accompanied by Eve 6 - Inside Out. Tay has chosen Bow Down as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Damon Pierce has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 29 - 18 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Damon Pierce!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 19 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Cray Daddy Tay!
The judges for this bout are John Mangel, Ben Watson and Eliza Hachem.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Tay lands a slapping body shot.
Nice body punch from Tay.

Pierce rushes Tay and presses him up against the cage.

Pierce has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Tay uses from the top position.
Tay trying to control the position from guard on top but Pierce is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Pierce manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Pierce lands a nice shot to the head.
Tay sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Tay wants to improve his position but Pierce is controlling well.

Pierce with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
Tay is staying active underneath Pierce, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Tay tries to roll over but Pierce keeps him under control.
Pierce throwing shots but Tay is blocking nicely.

Pierce thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Tay's head.
Pierce lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.

Tay is looking for a sweep. Pierce is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Pierce winds up and cracks Tay with a swinging punch to the side of the head.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Pierce content to control rather than advance.
Pierce landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Tay pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
Pierce misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Pierce changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Tay looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Damon Pierce overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Pierce is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Tay moves into full guard.
Pierce looking to sit in guard and control but Tay gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Tay is looking to work some ground and pound but Pierce has wrist control.

Tay working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Pierce bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Tay's guard.

Tay escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Pierce gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
We've been hearing that Pierce has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish.

Pierce postures up and lands a big shot to Tay's brow.
Pierce trying to control the position from guard on top but Tay is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Pierce is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Tay is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Pierce distracts Tay with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Pierce lands a couple of digs.
Tay keeping moving, preventing Pierce from controlling successfully.
Pierce postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Tay keeping full guard, as Pierce tries to pass.
Tay avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

Pierce looking to sit in guard and control but Tay gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Pierce is on top in guard.
Tay lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Pierce!
This has been an exciting period of action!
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Tay cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Pierce tries to lock up and control but Tay gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Tay is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Pierce can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
My spies in The Training Hive (msg to rent a coach) inform me that Tay has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!



Pierce shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Pierce was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Tay is trying to improve his position.
Pierce lands some shots froms side control.
Pierce throwing ground and pound but whilst doing so, he forgets to control position and Tay works his way back to half guard. Good composure under pressure.
Pierce not landing any meaningful shots this time.

Pierce sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Tay keeping moving, preventing Pierce from controlling successfully.
Tay manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Pierce manages to get himself to full guard.
Tay wants to control from the top but Pierce keeps moving.
Tay missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Cray Daddy Tay has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Pierce looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Pierce has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Pierce escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Tay gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Tay throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Tay trying to control the position from guard on top but Pierce is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Pierce is pulling down on Tay's head. It's preventing any offense from Tay, at least for the moment.

Pierce fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Damon Pierce.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Pierce, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

After the fight, Damon Pierce was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
