PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Cian McGarrity (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mitsuyo Maeda (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). McGarrity comes to the cage accompanied by Irish Fighting Song - We Come in Pieces. Well, I have no idea who's going to take this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 23 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Cian McGarrity!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 16 - 8 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Mitsuyo Maeda!
The judges for this bout are Bruno Lombardi, Lou da Vinci and Russell Pearce.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
McGarrity throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
McGarrity tries a head kick but it misses.
Maeda shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has McGarrity pinned against the cage. McGarrity gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Maeda tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but McGarrity defends well and Maeda ends up having to push McGarrity into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Maeda stays in close to his opponent and throws a right hand to the body.

Maeda breaks from the clinch.
McGarrity looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.

Maeda closes the distance and clinches.
Maeda jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as McGarrity walks away with a smile on his face. Maeda gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Cian McGarrity has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mitsuyo Maeda.

A slow jab from McGarrity misses its intended target.
McGarrity pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
Maeda blocks a head kick by McGarrity.
Maeda throws an overhand right that lands on McGarrity's shoulder, as McGarrity tries to avoid the shot.

Cian McGarrity seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
McGarrity throws a hook but Maeda blocks it.
McGarrity scores with a jab.
McGarrity ducks under a wild hook from Maeda.

Maeda closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. McGarrity quickly recovers to half guard.
Maeda uses his free foot to push down on McGarrity's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for McGarrity.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as McGarrity accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
McGarrity is stalling in the full guard.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Maeda is on top in guard.
McGarrity is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as McGarrity holds on and takes a little breather.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Cian McGarrity just wasn't active enough.

My spies in Brazilian Elite Team inform me that Maeda has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!
McGarrity wants to improve his position but Maeda is controlling well.
Maeda seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but McGarrity does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Mitsuyo Maeda showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Maeda takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.
McGarrity lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Maeda wants to clinch
and McGarrity makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Maeda tries to score a power double leg takedown but McGarrity sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Maeda somewhat.
Maeda looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? McGarrity is fending him off so far but Maeda persists. Nope, McGarrity circles away and we're back to standing.
Maeda lands with a hook. McGarrity tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.

McGarrity can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Maeda is looking to escape.
Maeda is desperately trying to improve his position but McGarrity has a good base and remains in mount.

Maeda is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of McGarrity's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take McGarrity's back!
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Maeda is staying calm and holding on to the back position, whilst working on a rear naked choke. McGarrity is defending well though. Maeda let's go of the attempt for now.
McGarrity is keeping busy.
Maeda is trying to stick to McGarrity's back but McGarrity is turning into Maeda. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Maeda's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by McGarrity.

Maeda seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

McGarrity stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Maeda swivels though and keeps the full guard.
McGarrity is fighting to break Maeda's control of his arms but Maeda is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Mitsuyo Maeda wasn't active enough on the ground.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
McGarrity stuns Maeda with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.

I've got Maeda winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
